Inspirational Suzanne Alcock Thompson, founder of Asu Nail and Beauty Supplies and Training Academy, talks to IB about her life in and out of work.

After my exams I took a full time job with the retail store Morgan, and I progressed quickly to management level. I had to maintain a well-groomed appearance and it was then that I began to have regular beauty treatments. One day I mentioned to my therapist that I would love to give this a go, and with her encouragement I did some part time courses over the next year, while still working full time. What began as a hobby, doing treatments for my family and friends, quickly became the thing that was obviously the job I was meant to do as my reputation and income increased. I took the plunge and began to work at it full time... I haven’t looked back since.

I love the flexibility and diversity of my role, one day is never the same as another. One day I am educating, the next working on and implementing a marketing strategy, the next flying off on a business trip to source exciting new products or techniques. I love the thrill of hard work, progression, selling, ticking those tasks off your list and driving a team forward, whilst growing and developing both my businesses. I love this industry and am so excited to be involved in its many different areas.

I am passionate about educating, it is the most rewarding thing in life. Whether it is something as simple as teaching a baby its first word or seeing that look on a person’s face when it clicks and they understand what you are trying to get across to them. As an educator it is your mission to ensure that your students learn and understand what you are teaching them, but I get a fantastic feeling when they or my educators teach me something. None of us are ever finished learning. When a course is completed, I feel proud that I’ve made a difference in someone’s job, career or day... That is priceless.

“I am passionate about educating, it is the most rewarding thing in life.”

My spare time is devoted to my boys, my husband John and my sons, Toby (3) and Olly (2). We do the important stuff when we are together like playing in the garden, going to the park or visiting their all time favourite place, Smyth’s Toy Store. I also like Facebook to catch up on friends but there is nothing like meeting up with my girlfriends for a coffee or lunch in person rather than virtually.

I play golf, not that much anymore since I had my children, but I still get to the driving range and play a round when I can. I have been told my swing is beautiful and I can sure drive a ball, but nothing that may win me any money because my husband always wins!

My favourite nail treatment is a Pedicure! I have them all year round... I cannot be without colour on my toes. Toes are extremely strange looking so keeping them a little glam is always good.

Who was my childhood hero? Wow, now that’s a good question. I was unable to answer so I called my mother for advice and she was unable to answer too. This in itself speaks volumes that she is the first person that I would call. We were a working class family and my parents provided for us, I never went without and I suppose I am trying to provide the same for my family.

I would like to be remembered as fun, flirty and fabulous!
