Korea-Based Daedong Metals Adds Compacted Graphite Iron Iron caster Daedong Metals Co.
Ltd., Daegu, South Korea, is installing a compacted graphite iron (CGI) pro- cess control system it expects to have in production sometime this month. The company has contracted with
SinterCast, Stockholm, Sweden, to provide the technology necessary to produce CGI. A purpose-built version of the supplier’s process control system will provide liquid metal analysis ca- pability and operator feedback results at two different locations in the metal- casting facility. Daedong will run series production
of three different CGI cylinder heads for commercial vehicle engines rang- ing from 6-L to 11-L displacement. The heads will be used for the high performance versions of the existing engines and are forecast to provide a production volume of approximately 50,000 engine equivalents in 2011. “The CGI heads are specifically used
for the high power versions of the en- gines and, as the sector continues to move toward higher power density, the CGI volume is expected to increase,” said Steve Dawson, president and chief executive officer of SinterCast.
