DIGITAL: LARGE FORMAT PRINTERS

Set-up for success

2010 was a difficult year and with many companies still tightening their belts, will 2011 be any different? For some pointers, here's a round-up of the past year's technology highlights and some tasters for the year ahead By Tracey Rushton-Thorpe

ccording to Canon, the market is growing, which is welcome news to us all. LFP product manager for Canon UK, Gill Mussell, said: “Printers with a large format inkjet capability have found a growing market for signage, industrial printing and decoration markets in the past 12 months.” Canon’s report, Redefinition of the digital printer, found revenue growth was especially good in the photobooks market, which was up 27 per cent, signage, up 13 per cent and display, up 11 per cent. Wide format display markets and memory products were both tipped to be helpful in staving off the worst of the economic downturn for this year and going into 2011. Gill continued: “Canon continues to develop its ImagePrograf series of large format printers (LFPs) with 2010 launches in the 24 and 44in markets. We have had a lot of interest in the iPF6300, iPF6350 and iPF8300, which have been geared towards the photography and fine art markets and the iPF815 and iPF820, which are ideal for the CAD and geographical information systems (GIS) markets.

“It’s important to choose the right device to suit your needs. The iPF6300, iPF6350 and iPF8300, for example, feature Canon’s new 12- ink Lucia EX pigment ink system. Their colour gamut is approximately 20 per cent wider than the previous Canon fine art printers, making them ideal for the photography and fine art markets.

“In contrast, the 44in iPF815 and iPF825 are designed for the specialist CAD and GIS sector. The five-colour models boast exceptional line reproduction with a minimum line width of 0.02mm and 1,200dpi resolution, in order to produce detailed blueprints for construction and cartography.”

Quite simply, new product innovation has been at the top of the agenda for Canon in 2010,
