A very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our readers – and welcome to a bumper Winter edition of World of Cruising magazine! We are making this our signature issue by including our

annual Cruise Planner of all the cruise lines, plus a brand new regular feature, Land Cruising, looking at some of the world’s classic Great Rail journeys, which all feature high-quality deluxe travel elements similar to the sea-going version. It is a match we are sure our readers will enjoy in the months to come – and is well worth considering in future. There is also a big focus on onboard features, with wine- themed cruises and the cuisine of Holland America Line under the spotlight, while, for destination highlights, we go ‘on safari’ in South Africa, to the Canadian Arctic with adventure specialists Cruise North Expeditions and to the Falklands Islands, one of cruising’s surprise new ports of call. We have a couple of serene options as well, taking a gentle

Danube river voyage in the company of Tauck Tours and a blissful sail-cruise on the classic yacht Sea Cloud. And then there’s the chic deluxe style of Le Boreal, the brand new Cunarder Queen Elizabeth and the classic Athena. It all serves to highlight the amazing – and still growing

– variety that cruising has to offer in all its shapes and guises, from the small and selective to the large and all-encompassing. And talking of large, we also have a special News feature on

the Allure of the Seas, the literal latest and greatest from Royal Caribbean. We were on board this amazing leviathan for a preview voyage ahead of her official christening and came away immensely impressed by the astonishing entertainment quotient on the 220,000-ton vessel. This vast (and long) ship may not be everyone’s cup of tea – it carries more than 5,000 passengers and visits only a handful of fairly hum-drum Caribbean ports – but it packs an enormous

amount of activities and amenities into its capacious bulk. There is a consistently high level of quality and glamour throughout the public areas and Royal Caribbean’s new tie-up with the DreamWorks animation company that adds characters like Shrek, the penguins from Madagascar (an absolutely hilarious addition, as they even managed to ‘hijack’ the Captain’s lifeboat drill!) and Kung Fu Panda to the family-orientated options. Then you add in the Broadway quality production shows of Chicago and The Blue Planet, the Aqua Theater and the ice-skating extravaganzas, multiple dining alternatives (including five genuine five-star restaurants) and extensive shopping, and this truly is a ship of a different type and style to anything else on the high seas – with the possible exception of sister ship Oasis of the Seas. The only question is – will there be another? Industry specula- tion suggests there could well be an order for 2014 but, for now, the sheer presence and immensity of Allure ensures we have plenty to enjoy in the wide World of Cruising for some time to come!

NEXT EDITION Fall Splendour

Our Spring edition will be geared to a special autumn look – the Fall Foliage season of Canada and New England – as we set sail on a blissful and spectacular voyage from Montreal to New York with Crystal Cruises. This region, along the St Lawrence Seaway, around Nova

Scotia and down the USA’s eastern seaboard, is a treasure- trove of the beautiful and unexpected, with wonderful cities like Quebec and Boston, small-scale adventures at Halifax and St John, the unexpected of Newport (Rhode Island) and Portland (Maine) – and the constant backdrop of the stunning gold-and- red autumn colouring. It all makes for a real thinking person’s cruise, and we will have an in-depth portrayal of everything in store, as well as extended highlights of each port of call along the way throughout the year. Of course, there will be our usual array of news, reviews and

features, too, including a rare voyage to the ‘North Pole,’ a trip to Tahiti with Paul Gauguin Cruises, the chic little Hebridean Princess, the Europa of Hapa-Lloyd, and much, much more. Don’t miss it!
