These are just a few of the potential downsides of working for Congress. The flip side is that nearly every day is different, fast- paced and exciting. There is also a certain level of prestige associated with a congressional job. And most members of Congress and Capitol Hill staffers feel that the best part of the job is working on issues they believe in.

Not to mention the contacts: The majority of Capitol Hill staffers are not lifers; they parlay their experience on the Hill to pursue careers in local and national politics, issue advocacy, law, government, inter- national affairs and many other avenues— career paths often made more accessible because of the opportunities opened up to them from their Congressional contacts.
Create opportunities
As unique an entity as Congress is, its rules for hiring are much like any other industry. Networking is key. Tom Morris, president of Morris Associates, Inc., a D.C.- based outplacement, training and career counseling firm, concurred. “Networking is the single most effective way to get a job in Congress.” He advises job seekers to contact members of Congress from their home state as a starting point, and added, “Don’t overlook locally elected officials who are moving up, such as city council members or mayors.” They may be able to provide a letter of introduction or have contacts you would not otherwise have.
Morris mentioned that volunteering for campaign work can be another great way to network. Serving on local boards and commissions can also provide experience and may lead to a full-time position down the road.

The position of Division Counsel requires the following: Licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Demonstrates experience in school or local government law. Roll Call, The Hill and Opportunities in Public Affairs are three publications that have Hill-centric employment listings. And after every election, the Committee on House Administration provides a resume drop area that collects and distributes resumes to the newly elected House members.
Timing and tenacity Of course, timing plays a significant
role when applying for Congressional positions. The most applications, especially on Capitol Hill, are received in post-election years. The beginning of summer sees the largest number of applicants interested in (or at least willing to take) very low-paying or unpaid jobs.
When considering a position, know that many of today’s Congressional powerhouses started out making coffee for their bosses. Morris noted, “If you really believe in the cause and are willing to do whatever it takes to help, chances are you’ll do well.” A good attitude—however menial the work—will garner the attention of other members. It is helpful to remember that once you have held a position on the Hill and developed a positive reputation for yourself, more job offers will follow, often in places you never anticipated.
