Rockville’s Gongbay
can’t get late first down as Baltimore triumphs
BY GREG SCHIMMEL Crusoe Gongbay was sure he
had made it. The Rockville running back
took a direct snap on fourth and one from the Baltimore All- Stars’ 12-yard line late in the fourth quarter of the Maryland Crab Bowl on Saturday with his Washington All-Stars trailing by four points. Gongbay plunged forward
and appeared to have gained enough yardage for a first down, but an official measurement showed he had been marked down about a chain link short. “I had the first down,” Gong- bay said. “The ref moved the ball

but then the other ref moved it back.” Team Baltimore took over on
downs with 3 minutes 20 sec- onds left to play and was able to run out the clock to beat Team Washington, 21-17, for the first time in the three-year history of the event. Glenelg wide receiver Colin
Osborne caught touchdown passes of 43 and 50 yards for Team Baltimore, and Damascus quarterback Connor Frazier threwtwo touchdown passes for TeamWashington. The event at Bowie State Uni-
versity featured the top seniors from Maryland public and pri- vate high schools and divided the players into Washington-ar- ea and Baltimore-area squads.
NONLEAGUEGIRLS’BASKETBALL Georgetown Visitation goes on offensive in win
No. 14 Cubs outpace George Mason to stay unbeaten
BY JAMESWAGNER Georgetown Visitation Coach
Mike McCarthy likes to use his team’s quickness, depth and de- fense to break down the myriad opponents it faces as awell-trav- eled private school squad. But on Saturday afternoon
against GeorgeMason, amatch- up against an accomplished Vir- ginia public school, the Cubs’ defense, asMcCarthy constantly reminded his team, was not good enough. That is, until the final three
minutes of the game. With two steals, a handful of tough defen- sive stands against the Mus- tangs and three key three-point- ers, the No. 14 Cubs pulled out a hard-fought 67-57 win over George Mason in the Tina Thompson “She Got Game” Classic, a showcase at McNa- mara that included some of the region’s best teams. “We didwhatwewanted to do
offensively today,” McCarthy said. “We scored almost 70 points. But our defense wasn’t like it has been. They were get- ting toomany
easybaskets. They hit shots too. But I think some of it was them and some of it was us.” The Mustangs (6-3) con-
trolledmuch of the first quarter, taking a 16-15 lead.Butwhen the Cubs (6-0) pulled away on a 12-2 run, GeorgeMason’s size proved to be a problemfor Visitation. Center Ashley Alexander, a
5-foot-10 freshman who scored 20 points in the game, and for- ward Stephanie Cheney , a 6-

foot sophomore who added 16, gave the smaller Visitation de- fenders fits and helping the Mustangs knot the score at 31 at the half. The Cubs marched out to a
seven-point lead in the third quarter with an up-tempo of- fense. But again, George Mason crawled back, taking a 48-47 lead on the first possession of the fourth quarter on a jumper by RebeccaMoot. A three-point- er by Visitation’s Maddy Wil- liams (team-high 20 points), fol- lowed by another one by Kath- leen Tabb (16 points) sparked the final Cubs’ push. “We got tired,” saidMustangs
Coach LaBryan Thomas, whose team won the Virginia A Divi- sion 2 title the past two seasons. “We had only six or seven kids playing the whole game. They wore us down, and we stayed with them for three quarters. They’re a good team.” McCarthy’s constant cycle of
players helped keep them fresh and active, and they outscored the Mustangs 20-12 in the final frame. “It’s always really reassuring
knowing that when you’re com- ing out that whoever is coming for you is going to get the job done, and its always good to know that,” said Visitation ju- nior guard Kate Gillespie, who scored 16 points. “And to get some rest, too.”

Thornton has help in a rout of Eleanor Roosevelt 60 28
Muhammad leads second-quarter rally as Mustangs win
BY ALAN GOLDENBACH Few players in the Washing-
ton area have started the season as strongly asMcNamara senior guard Marcus Thornton. The William & Mary signee entered Saturday’s game against No. 14 Eleanor Roosevelt averaging nearly 25 points per game and displaying remarkable range frombehind the arc. But the ninth-ranked Mus-
tangs showed that Thornton has plenty of support in their 60-28 victory over the Raiders. Senior guard Ibn Muhammad scored seven second-quarter points as McNamara ended the first half on a 17-0 run and cruised to victory at Bowie State. “I’m not going to be the only
one scoring here,” said Thorn- ton, who scored eight of his team-high 12 points in the first quarter but took a back seat when McNamara broke the game open. My teammates “all understand that when [oppo- nents] focus on me, they’ve got to take charge.” Thornton hit three of his first

four shots to score McNamara’s first eight points, but toward the end of the first quarter, Roosevelt began overplaying him, sometimes double-team- ing and forcing him into bad shots or giving up the ball. “Marcus told me they were
denying him a little too much,” said Muhammad, who will play for Maryland-Eastern Shore, “and he told me I might have to take over.” Roosevelt led 16-13 after a three-pointer by junior Marcel-
lus Gail with 5 minutes 45 seconds to go in the second quarter. McNamara (6-1) tied it on a pretty layup from Callon Dailey off a touch pass fromthe free-throw line by Tyler Shipe. Thornton hit a free throwto put theMustangs ahead and then it was allMcNamara. Muhammad hit an 18-foot
pull-up, and then a three-point- er. Dailey made a steal and a fast-break layup. Stephan Jig- getts converted a three-point play on a fast break less than a

minute before halftime. Kevin Robbins hit a short bank shot to make it 31-16 at the break. “Marcus is a heck of a player,”
said McNamara Coach Marty Keithline, whose team has won six straight since losing its opener and visitsNo. 4 Gonzaga on Wednesday. “But our team has done a good job of giving good looks to the other four guys out there. They made them” Saturday. Roosevelt (2-3) was less than
24 hours removed from an 86- 84 double-overtime loss atWise on Friday night. The Raiders’ five starters
managed just 12 points, but Coach Brendan O’Connell wasn’t about to blame it on fatigue. “That’s not an excuse. That’s
too easy to say,” O’Connell said. “We just hit a wall in the second quarter, but even coming out of halftime, we still felt we had a shot. But we came out flat and they just buried us.”

Georgetown Visitation’sMaddy Williams puts up a shot in the lane. Williams scored a team-high 20 points as the Cubs topped aGeorge Mason team that has won two straight state titles at its level.
“I felt like I was in college
already playing with the best kids in the area,” said Friendly cornerback Sherrod Baltimore, who intercepted three passes for Team Washington. “It was great competition.” Baltimore’s second intercep-
tion led to Frazier’s first touch- down pass late in the first half, when Team Washington took over at its 4-yard line and drove 96 yards in 1:15. Frazier found Douglass wide
receiverMilton Williams withan 18-yard touchdown pass in the left corner of the end zone to give TeamWashington a 10-7 lead five seconds before halftime. Osborne’s first touchdown
catch from Loyola Blakefield quarterback Mike Fafaul put Team Baltimore back ahead, 14- 10, with 6:28 left in the third quarter. Frazier—who alternated pos- sessions with Gaithersburg
quarterback Zach Fetters—then found Damascus teammate Brandon Phelps for a 51-yard touchdown pass on TeamWash- ington’s next offensive play to put his squad back in front. “That felt good to hook up
with Brandon,” Frazier said. “He’s been hurt this year so we didn’t get too many of those, but it felt good.” Team Baltimore used a trick
play to cap the scoring, when North Harford running back Brandon Bayer took a pitch and threw a pass to Osborne for a 50-yard touchdown with 14:02 left in the game. Team Washington couldn’t
take advantage of Team Balti- more turning the ball over on downs at its 21-yard line with 5:16 left, as Gongbay’s short run stalled its next possession and what turned out to be its final chance.
