Grown-up cheer

What would Handel say? Hallelujah.

Christmas is not only a season when classical music comes into its own, but it’s also a time when people lose some of their inhibitions about making it. In a chorus-heavy town such as Washington, “Messiah” singalongs proliferate, and none is more popular than the Kennedy Center’s free concert, 200 choristers strong, plus soloists and a score-toting audience. Handel would have been thrilled. Or bemused. // 8 p.m. Thursday. Kennedy Center, 2700 F St. NW. 202- 467-4600. www.kennedy-center.org. Free tickets will be distributed in front of the Concert Hall starting at 6 p.m.

Kenny Rogers The Gambler rolls out a selection of greatest hits and holiday standards. // 5 p.m. Sunday. Music Center at Strathmore, 5301 Tuckerman Lane, North Bethesda. 301-581-5100. www. strathmore.org. $49.50-$77.50.

Baltimore Bass Connection Charm City party-starters including rapper Spank Rock, DJ duo Devlin & Darko and punk rabble-rousers the Death Set bring the mayhem.
