Mark Maske ranks the top teams in the NFL each week. His rankings through Sunday afternoon games:

1

2 3

4 5 7

Jets (9-2): The preseason hype was considerable, but they will be living up to it if they win Monday night at New England.

Falcons (10-2): They’re the first NFL team to reach 10 wins this season, although the Jets or Patriots will join them Monday night.

Patriots (9-2): Tom Brady enters Monday’s game with 25 straight regular season wins at home.

Ravens (8-3): They entered Sunday night against the Steelers with a chance to take control of the division race, given their earlier triumph at Pittsburgh.

Steelers (8-3): They’re a solid team but there are so many side issues, from Ben Roethlisberger’s injury to the team’s war of words with the NFL over illegal hits.

6Bears (9-3): They’re playing well on the road (5-1).

Saints (9-3): No one is paying them much attention, but they’re in position for another playoff run.

8Chiefs (8-4): They’re built to win the sort of tough game

they won against Denver.

9Eagles (8-4) Michael Vick is playing awfully well, but also

taking a lot of jarring hits.

10 Giants (8-4): They made it look easy against the

Redskins. JEFFREY PHELPS/ASSOCIATED PRESS Green Bay’s AndrewQuarless, top, blocks San Francisco safety DashonGoldson as Donald Driver makes his way to the end zone.

CHIEFS10, BRONCOS6

Make no mistake about it: Kansas

City was out to avenge a 20-point loss to Denver three weeks ago. Noneof the Chiefs said so during the

week leading up to Sunday’s rematch, but after their ragged win over the Broncos, there was no denying the game was extra special. “The performance they put on us

three weeks ago was disheartening. It was embarrassing,” CB Brandon Carr said. “We had a sick feeling in us.” JamaalCharles ran for116yardsand

Matt Cassel threwa three-yardpass to Leonard Pope for the only touchdown as the Chiefs improved to 6-0 at home and remained in first place in the AFC West. KnowshonMorenoran for161yards

for the Broncos (3-9), who are endur- ing one of their worst stretches in decades, losing 17 of their last 22 games under Coach Josh McDaniels. McDaniels, whowas snubbed in the

postgame handshake by Chiefs Coach Todd Haley after the 49-29 loss in Denver, actually got a postgame hug and a pat on the head this time. “There were some penalties and turnovers and different things that kind of swayedmomentuma little bit,” McDaniels said. “We just never could finish once we got down there in the red zone.” Dwayne Bowe, who had caught a touchdown pass in a team-record seven straight games and came in leading the NFL with 14 touchdown catches, was held without a catch by CB Champ Bailey. “He is a true pro,” saidMcDaniels, “a

guy that is a big time competitor. [Bowe] is a receiver who we think is certainly one of the very best in this league and has had a great stretch.” Kyle Orton, who came in leading the

NFL in yards passing, was 9 of 28 for 117 yards.

BEARS 24, LIONS 20 Chicago made some breaks and

might have received one in a win over Detroit. Again. QB Jay Cutler threw the go-ahead

touchdown pass to Brandon Manu- maleuna one play after a question- able call midway through the fourth quarter, lifting the Bears. Referee Ed Hochuli flagged Ndamu-

kong Suh for unnecessary roughness after Suh seemed to hit Cutler’s shoulder pads, jolting him to the turf from behind when the quarterback was running downfield. Instead of facing second and two

from the Detroit 14, Chicago had a first down at the 7, and Cutler threw the scoring pass with 8:39 left. The Bears, of course, thought

Hochuli got it right. “He put a forearm into the back of

his head,” RB Matt Forte said. “He should’ve been penalized for it.” The Lions, meantime, were livid. “It wasn’t like elbowing himdown, it

was pushing him down,” CB Chris Houston said. Suh said he wasn’t going to judge

the flag. “I really don’t carewhat he called or

if it was a penalty or not,” he said. “I’m just going out there to make a play.”

Detroit lost its first game this

season at Chicago, where WR Calvin Johnson appeared to catch a game- winning touchdown, only to have officials rule he didn’t complete the play. The Bears improved 9-3 and remain

atop the NFC North, one game ahead of the Green Bay Packers. Detroit lost its fifth straight.

RAMS19, CARDINALS6

St. Louis didn’t need a great offen-

sive performance to end its eight- game losing streak to Arizona. Not against a Cardinals team that

can’t muster a touchdown. Steven Jackson rushed for 102

yards, including27onthe game’s lone TD, and St. Louis sent Arizona to its seventh loss in a row. The Rams won consecutive road

games for the first time since Nov. 18, 2007, and remained in a first-place tie with Seattle in the weak NFCWest. Josh Brown kicked four field goals

for St. Louis. Rookie QB John Skelton made his

NFL debut for Arizona (3-9) in the fourth quarter after Derek Anderson was benched and backup Max Hall went out with a dislocated left shoul- der.

After the game, Coach Ken Whisen-

hunt said Anderson “didn’t seem right” after taking several hard hits in the first half. He said Anderson would be checked out for a possible concus- sion. The Cardinals didn’t score a touch-

down for the second game in a row and have just one in their last three contests—on the final play of a 31-13 loss at Kansas City. St. Louis scored 19 consecutive

points after Jay Feely’s first-quarter field goals of 45 and 41 yards put Arizona up 6-0. Rams rookie QB Sam Bradford

passed for 187 yards and threw just his second interception in the last seven games. Arizona’s Tim Hightower rushed for

81 yards, but he had just 14 in the second half.

SEAHAWKS31, PANTHERS14

A trio of touchdowns from Mar-

shawnLynchandanearly perfect third quarter made up for one miserable half by Seattle. Against hapless Carolina, that was

more than enough. Lynch scored on a pair of one-yard

runs in the third quarter, sandwiched around Lofa Tatupu’s 26-yard inter- ception return for a score, and the Seahawks rallied from a 14-0 deficit for a critical win over the Panthers. Lynch added a 22-yard touchdown

in the fourth quarter for the first three-touchdown day of his career as Seattle overcame injuries to their top two receivers and an awful first-half performance to stay even with St. Louis on top of the NFC West. Seattle broke a two-game losing streak. Lynch ran 21 times for 83 yards, his

most since posting a season-high 89 yardsagainst Arizona nearly sixweeks ago, and Seattle’s 162 yards rushing were a season-best. Matt Hasselbeck was intercepted twice, but threw for 229 yards despite losing WRs Mike Williams and Ben Obomanu to injury. Williams had his ankle rolled up on

while blocking on Seattle’s first pos- sessionandreturned to the sideline at halftime in street clothes. Obomanu was hurt getting crunched by Carolina safety Charles Godfrey on a 27-yard reception in the second quarter. Obo- manu immediately went to the locker room holding his hand and never returned. Appearing headed for a season-de-

flating loss to the worst team in the NFL, the Seahawks rebounded with 21 points in the third quarter, thanks to a trio of big plays.
