CELTICS100,NETS75 Boston was going through its final

warmups prior to facing New Jersey when all-star G Rajon Rondo walked over to Coach Doc Rivers to give him the bad news. “It was literally about two seconds

before the game was going to start,” Rivers said of when he learned that Rondo couldn’t play through ham- string and foot injuries. Rivers turned to backup point guard

Nate Robinson and told him he was starting. “I just go about things thesameway,” said Robinson, who scored a game- high 21 points and dished off for six assists in the Celtics’ rout, the team’s seventh straight win.

BYMICHAEL LEE

phoenix—Whenhewasa rising senior at Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh, N.C., John Wall was invited to attend the Steve Nash Skills Academy in New Jersey. Wall met with Nash, spoke him a little, and has contin- ued to study what the two-time league’s most valuable player does to be so successful. In his first professional match-

up against Nash,Wall got lessons in abundance on how to efficient- ly run an offense and keep an opposing defense at your mercy. Nash ran a full clinic on Sunday, as he took advantage of theWash- ington Wizards’ inability to de- fend pick-and-rolls by throwing lob after lob to his slam-dunking teammates. And when the Wiz- ards failed to play him honest, he calmly hit open jumpers. Wall finished with his fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 assists, but after doing most of his damage in the first three quarters, Nash fin- ished 20 points and 17 assists—to hand the Wizards their 10th con- secutive road loss to start the season, 125-108. Their past four road losses have all been by dou- ble digits. Andray Blatche had 24 points

to lead the Wizards, whohave lost four consecutive games in Phoe- nix, with their last win coming on Dec. 22, 2006, when Gilbert Are- nas scored 54 points in an over- time victory. Arenas came off the bench for the second game in a row, with Coach Flip Saunders going with a starting back court

RALPH FRESO/ASSOCIATED PRESS Gilbert Arenas finished with 14 points coming off a Wizards bench that scored 60 points against the Suns.

Suns take control of Wizards in 3rd quarter

Nash doles out 8 assists in decisive period as Wizards fall, 125-108

of Kirk Hinrich and Wall, with Alonzo Gee playing small for- ward. Saunders said he would have to “wait and see” if would make any changes, but added, “I don’t look at guys who start games. I look at guys who finish games. Who starts really doesn’t matter.” Arenas scored 14 points to help

a Wizards bench that scored 60 points. For the first time in nearly three weeks, the Wizards had their full complement of players (aside from the still-rehabbing Josh Howard), as Nick Young returned after missing one game because of a bruised right thigh he injured inWednesday’s loss in Toronto.Andduring the first half, they looked like a competent group, as they shot 54.2 percent and trailed by just three points at the break. Nash took control of the game

in the third period, handing out eight assists, as the Suns out- scored the Wizards 31-17. The Suns beat the Wizards by using the same play: a player curling around on a back screen with Nash tossing the ball toward the rim. After Nash found Channing Frye for a dunk, Wall responded by tossing a lob to Gee. The Suns then went on a 12-2 run, with Nash and Jason Richardson (21 points) hitting three-pointers. They led, 95-78, entering the fourth quarter. The Wizards trailed by 21

points in the fourth quarter, and Suns Coach Alvin Gentry seemed content with letting his starters sit for the rest of the night. But he had to change those plans as the Wizards — with a lineup that featured Arenas, Wall, Blatche, Young and Trevor Booker — got within 107-95 with 5 minutes 13 seconds remaining as Arenas found Blatche for a six-foot jump shot.Nash quickly restored order,

handing out three assists, and sat for the final 2:42 after the Suns pushed the lead back to 18. The Wizards started out by utilizing their one decided advan- tage, by letting Blatche go to work on the Suns’ smallish front line. Blatche scored 10 of the Wizards’ first 14 points, as he drove around Earl Barron and coolly took pass- es from Wall and hit jumpers. Blatche helped start an 11-0 run that gave the Wizards a 23-14 lead in the first period with two free throws, then Wall found Yi Jian- lian open inside for a dunk and later hit a three-pointer. Yi, playing his second game

since returning from a hyperex- tended right knee suffered in Chicago on Nov. 13, played with the same fervor he showed early in the preseason as he helped the Wizards take a 26-16 lead when he knocked down a three-pointer late in the first quarter. Yi matched his season high with 13 points. Young made 5 of 6 shots and

scored 12 of his 20 in the first half. He recovered an offensive re- bound, then drove around and got fouled while making a base- line hook shot to give the Wizards 53-50 lead. He then hit another pullup jumper to put the Wizards ahead, 57-54, nodding his head as he backpedaled. The Suns responded with a

10-2 run, with Nash tying the game at 57, then feeding Hakim Warrick for two baskets.Warrick gave the Suns a 64-59 lead when he caught a pass from Nash, slashed to the basket and rammed the ball over Yi. But while the Suns and their fans celebrated the emphatic slam, Wall responded with a long bank shot as time expired. Warrick finished with a game-high 26 points off the bench. leem@washpost.com
