Consecutive wins in December for the San Diego Chargers prior to Sunday’s loss to the Raiders. The mark had tied an NFL record for most consecutive victories in any month.

STAROFTHEDAY ‘Special’ Jones-Drew leads Jags into first place

It wasn’t a pretty win, but Jacksonville’s fourth in its past five games put it in first place, largely due to running back Maurice Jones-Drew. He carried 31 times—helping the Jags hang on to the ball for 39 minutes 54 seconds—for 186 yards in a 17-6 victory against Tennessee. “Obviously, Maurice Jones- Drew was special today, and we rode Maurice hard today,” Coach Jack Del Rio said. “He had a superb game.” Jones-Drew has run for at least 100 yards in five straight games. The Jags are 7-5 and alone atop the AFC South.

nine-yard touchdown pass caps comeback

tampa — Matty Ice came to the rescue again. Matt Ryan threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Michael Jen- kins with 4 minutes 31 seconds remaining Sunday as the Atlanta Falcons put together another fourth-quarter rally to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 28-24, for their sixth straight victory.

FALCONS BUCCANEERS 28 24 Eric Weems got the comeback

from a 10-point deficit started by scoring on a 102-yard kickoff re- turn. Brent Grimes sealed the win with an interception that stopped Tampa Bay’s final possession deep in Falcons territory. Ryan led his sixth fourth-quar-

ter, game-winning drive of the season for theNFCSouth leaders, keeping the 10-play, 67-yard march alive with a 25-yard com- pletion to Roddy White on third and 20. The Falcons (10-2) also benefited from a couple of costly penalties on the Bucs. Rookie LeGarrette Blount

rushed for 103 yards and fullback Earnest Graham threw a two- yard touchdown pass to John Gilmore for Tampa Bay (7-5), which fell to 0-5 against teams with winning records. Ryan completed 18 of 36 passes

for 205 yards and two touch- downs, overcoming two intercep- tions — Atlanta’s first turnovers in five games. The third-year pro threw a 17-

yard touchdown pass to Ovie Mughelli in the second quarter. Michael Turner rushed for 88 yards for the Falcons and scored ona five-yardrunthat gave Atlan- ta an early 7-0 lead. Josh Freeman was 19 for 38 for

181 yards and one touchdown for the third-place Bucs, who fell three games behind Atlantic in the NFC South. Grimes intercept- ed him for the second time this season, and had an earlier pick taken away by instant replay. The Bucs wore orange throw-

back jerseys from their expansion days in the late 1970s, and the team’s first coach, John McKay, was inducted into the franchise’s

one-yard touchdown throw to Williams tied it at 14 with 15

seconds left before halftime. Connor Barth’s 33-yard field

goal snapped the tie early in the thirdquarter.CoreyLynch’s inter- ception at the Atlanta 39 led to Graham’s touchdown pass to Gilmore that gave the Bucs a short-lived 24-14 lead. Weems took the ensuing kick-

off two yards deep in his own end zone, slipped past two diving tacklers as he made hisway to the sideline at about 25, then some- how stayed in bounds as he head- ed up the sideline in front of the Atlanta bench and ran into the clear. The Falcons have won five

straight in the intense division rivalry, with four of the games decided by six points or less. At- lanta won an earlier meeting this season, 27-21, when Blount was stopped for no gain on fourth and one from the Falcons 2 with just less than two minutes remaining. —Associated Press

For San Diego, a December mourn against Oakland 28 13

Chargers lose first December game since 2005

BY BERNIEWILSON

san diego — The San Diego Chargers are mortal in December after all. They found out at the hands of

the Oakland Raiders. Jason Campbell ran for one touchdown and threw for another, Darren McFadden ran for 97 yards and a touchdown and the Raiders took advantage of mistakes to stun host San Diego, 28-13, on Sunday. The loss puts a serious crimp in

the playoff hopes for the four- time defending AFC West cham- pion Chargers (6-6). They trail the Kansas City Chiefs by two games with four to play. Oakland (6-6) revived a running game that had been stopped cold in two straight losses. They ripped through the Chargers for 251 yards; Michael Bush led the way with 95 rushing yardsanda score. San Diego gained just 21 yards

stuffed for 16 yards on seven carries. Rookie Ryan Mathews didn’t play, apparently still both- ered by a high ankle sprain. The Raiders swept the season

series for the first time since2001. The loss ended the Chargers’

streak of 18 straight December victories; the streak tied an NFL record for most victories in any month. Their last December loss was

on Dec. 31, 2005. San Diego had been tied with the 1970-74Miami Dolphins, who won 18 straight in Novembers. The Raiders beat the Chargers

35-27 in Oakland on Oct. 10 when consecutive blocked punts early in the game led to a touchdown and a safety. That victory snapped Oakland’s 13-game los- ing streak to the Chargers. The Chargers corrected their problems during a four-game winning streak, but then reverted to the form that showed during an ugly 2-5 start. San Diego had two early turnovers in this game,

leading to a 14-0 Oakland lead. Darren Sproles fumbled a punt

early in the first quarter and Hiram Eugene recovered at the San Diego 18. On fourth-and-1 from the 9, the Raiders fooled the Chargers with a fake handoff to fullback Marcel Reece while Campbell ran a naked bootleg to the left for an easy touchdown. On the next Chargers posses-

sion, Philip Rivers overthrew Malcom Floyd and the ball went right to safetyMichael Huff, who returned it 15 yards to the San Diego 41. Campbell completed the drive with a 4-yard touch- down pass to rookie Jacoby Ford in the right corner of the end zone for a 14-0 lead. After San Diego’sNate Kaeding

kicked a 39-yard field goal,Camp- bell showed that the Raiders didn’t need a turnover to score. He led an 80-yard, 11-play drive that was capped by Bush’s 7-yard touchdown run, when he used a spin move and a strong second effort to power into the end zone for a 21-3 lead. Campbell was back at quarter-

back after Bruce Gradkowski was hurt late in the fourth quarter of last Sunday’s 33-17 loss toMiami. —Associated Press
