GOP’s 2012 Senate hopefuls race to the starting line

he 2012 presidential race may be off to a slow start — not a single Republican

has announced his (or her) intentions to run — but aspiring GOP pols are falling all over themselves to get into Senate races nationwide. Last week, formerMissouri

state treasurer Sarah Steelman became the latest tomake an early leap into the candidate pool when she announced her intention to challenge Sen. ClaireMcCaskill (D) in nearly two years. “We need jobs — urgently. We

need to balance the budget — urgently,” she said. “We have to fight if we’re going to save this country for our kids and grandkids. There is no time to wait.” Another factor in Steelman’s

quick candidacy was the looming presence of JimTalent (R), who lost his seat to McCaskill in 2006 and has been pondering a rematch ever since. Those close to the former senator say he is likely to decide by January, which, inmost other election cycles, would be extremely early tomake such intentions known. Missouri is not the only state

where the Senate race is starting fast. In Nebraska, the state’s

attorney general, Jon Bruning (R), joined the race against Sen. Ben Nelson (D) just three days — yes, you read that right — after the 2010 election. (Bruning’s announcement followed the decision by Gov. Dave Heineman, a Republican, not to challenge Nelson.) “Incumbents have incredible

built-in advantages, especially when it comes to raising money,” Bruning told the Fix regarding his decision to announce so early. “We will never raise asmuch

money as Senator Nelson but had to get started early to compete.” In Florida, state Senate

PresidentMike Haridopolos (R) is all but in the race against Sen. Bill Nelson (D). He visited Washington last week tomake his intentions clear. The Florida GOP race is

already getting testy. Sen. George LeMieux (R) — the outgoing caretaker of the seat vacated byMelMartinez — is another possible candidate for Nelson’s seat. A top aide of LeMieux’s drew attention when she tweeted a link to an article that detailedmistakes Haridopolosmade when filing his personal financial disclosure forms. Similar early entrances have begun inMontana, where GOP

BYTHENUMBERS 6 million

Democratic and Republican Senate campaign committees are carrying $5 million to

$6 million of debt into the 2012 cycle. With the 2010 playing field having extended far beyond initial expectations, the Senate campaign committees aren’t the only ones shouldering millions in debt. Both parties’ House campaign committees are between $6 million and $7 million in the red, as well.

Democratic Sens. Russ Feingold (Wis.), Joe Manchin (W.Va.), Ben Nelson (Neb.) and JimWebb (Va.) joined Republicans in opposing the measure, as did Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.). All but Feingold (who was defeated last month) face potentially tough reelection bids in 2012. On a second proposal that would extend the cuts on all income below $1 million, Feingold and Lieberman opposed the measure, as did Democratic Sens. Dick Durbin (Ill.), Tom Harkin (Iowa) and Jay Rockefeller (W.Va.).

THEBESTTHING THATHAPPENED TOREPUBLICANS Rep. Charles Rangel (D.N.Y.) became the first House member in

nearly three decades to be censured, and the drama isn’t over. Now that he has been duly punished for ethics violations, the question now will be how long Rangel sticks around and whether he continues to lash out. He remains defiant, saying he didn’t do anything to enrich himself—and that’s dangerous for Democrats, who would rather put the issue behind them. He seems to be too proud to resign over the situation, so we wouldn’t count on that. But we also wouldn’t expect to see him fade into the background—at least not right away.

THEBESTTHING THATHAPPENED TODEMOCRATS They got qualified leadership for their Senate and governor

committees. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, at long last, landed Sen. Patty Murray (Wash.) as its new chairwoman. It’s pretty clear she didn’t want the job—nobody did —but she at least gives Democrats an experienced hand for what looks to be a very tough cycle in which Democrats are defending twice as many seats as they are going after. Murray was the chairwoman during the 2002 campaign and didn’t have a great cycle. (Democrats lost a net of two seats.) But the environment was tough then, as it is now, and she has proved her campaign mettle, most recently surviving a tough reelection bid against Republican Dino Rossi. And at the Democratic Governors Association, the party landed Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley as its new chairman. O’Malley is thought to be a rising star for the Democrats, as a veteran of two tough campaigns against former governor Bob Ehrlich (R). — Aaron Blake and Felicia Sonmez

Sen. Bob Casey Jr. In both states, better-known

politicians are taking a bitmore time to decide on the races. Republican strategists regard Rep. Denny Rehberg as their strongest nominee inMontana, while a cast of thousands — or close to it — ismentioned against Casey. The profusion of Republican

Senate candidates is the result of twomain factors. First, the successes the party

experienced during the 2010 elections undoubtedly convinced aspiring GOP pols

that their time had come, and they are now quicklymoving to reap the rewards – financial and otherwise — of being the first candidate in a race. Second, more than twice as

many Democrats (23) as Republicans (10) are up for reelection in 2012. Thatmeans there are just

more targets for ambitious GOP- ers than their Democratic counterparts. Combine those daunting raw

numbers with a political climate in which Republicans are energized, and you begin to grasp the roots of the GOP’s bumper recruiting crop. Toomuch of a good thingmay

not be wonderful for the party, however. More candidatesmeansmore

primaries and, as the 2010 elections showed, those intraparty squabbles can produce a less-than-desirable nominee — potentially endangering Republicans’ chances ofmaximizing their pickups in November 2012. chriz.cillizza@washpost.com
