very so often, I take leave of the club I write

about and visit the real-life Birmingham Duplicate Bridge Club, one of the ACBL’s top clubs. In August, I lectured there and played — and met some taxing deals. Cover today’s East/South

cards; see if you can out- defend me. South’s open- ing bid of two hearts was “weak”; her three hearts denied a side ace or king. I led the ace of clubs. How should I continue? A diamond shift was attractive (I knew East had the king), but I counted only nine winners for South: five hearts, two clubs, one spade, one diamond. If she had 2, K Q 9 8 7 2, 9 8 5 3, 10 5, she could succeed unless I took my ace of spades next. That play would lose only if South had three spades and both the J-10. Alas, South won my dia-

mond shift at Trick Three with the ace, took three high trumps, cashed the K-Q of clubs to pitch her last dia- mond and finessed against my queen of spades. Making four. It was that kind of day. All the best to my friends

at the BDBC. DAILY QUESTION You hold: ♠ A Q 9 5 ♥ J 10 4 3 ♦ J 6 2 ♣ A 3 You are the dealer. What is

your opening call? ANSWER: Since no open-

ing bid is attractive, a few players would pass. But with two and a half defensive tricks and length in both major suits, most experts would deem the hand worth opening. In the modern style of “five-card majors,” open one diamond. To open in a three-card diamond suit is unpleasant and is necessary only with 4-4-3-2 pattern.
