Award winners line up The winners of the 2010 ACI-NA Environmental Achievement Awards have

been announced with Seattle-Tacoma, Portland and Southwest Florida airports among the recipients. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport’s ‘Environmental Strategy Plan

– A Vision for 2010 and Beyond’ earned it the Environmental Management Award; it was judged to have provided a framework for annual planning, budgeting and accountability by identifying the measurable environmental outcomes it would like to achieve by 2014. Portland picked up the Outreach, Education and Community

Involvement Award in recognition of its efforts to bring city and community leaders into a three-year public consultation on its materplan and city land use plan which helped identify the community’s vision and values. The Mitigation Award went to Southwest Florida International Airport

for their exceptional wildlife management programme. Finally, Buffalo Niagara International Airport became only the second airport to win the Special/Innovative Projects Award for its wetland treatment of glycol contaminated stormwater programme.

Green giant London Heathrow, the world’s busiest international airport, has become the

newest gateway to join ACI Europe’s Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. The hub achieved the ‘optimisation’ level of accreditation, which

recognises a substantial reduction in carbon emissions over the last three years thanks to effective carbon management procedures, accurate reporting of its carbon footprint and partnerships with key airport stakeholders to cut emissions. “The 23 airports that are now Airport Carbon Accredited span

12 European countries and account for over 30% of European passenger traffic. More than that, London-Heathrow’s accreditation brings the overall reduction achieved to date by the programme to over 540,000 tonnes of CO2

in just 16 months,” says Olivier Jankovec, director general,

ACI Europe. This is only the latest environmental award for BAA. Both Heathrow

and Stansted were recently awarded the Carbon Trust Standard for their carbon cutting. Heathrow has improved its carbon efficiency by nearly 12% since March 2008, while Stansted cut carbon emissions from its buildings and vehicles by nearly 2% between January 2007- December 2009.

Historic agreement Leading aviation industry figures have welcomed ICAO’s “historic”

resolution to work towards a globally harmonised approach to reducing aviation’s CO2

emissions, but urged members that more still

needs to be done. ACI director general, Angela Gittens, hailed the agreement saying:

“We are pleased to see that ICAO national delegations accept the need for a shared global vision and common goals as well as their willingness to move ahead on the agreed positions in the resolution, despite some remaining questions that will be addressed in future discussions. The aviation industry has shown that we are committed, proactive and realistic.” She said ACI supports ICAO’s goals of 2% fuel efficiency

improvements up to 2050, an aspirational goal of capping aviation’s carbon emissions by 2020, a global standard for aircraft engines by 2013 and a framework for market-based measures (MBMs) directed at international aviation. CANSO director general, Graham Lake, called the agreement “a

welcome first step and an historic moment for global aviation” but said emissions need to be cut faster and further and needs greater government support if they are to succeed. The resolution on the environment makes ICAO the first United

Nations Agency to lead a sector in the establishment of a globally harmonized agreement for addressing its CO2

emissions.

processing 400 mega litres of water a year could be built at Adelaide Airport next year under new plans. The joint project between utility company SA Water, Adelaide Airport and the West Torrens Council, would see recycled water used in air conditioning and cooling towers at the gateway if planning approval is granted.

IATA has announced the launch of a new navigation programme which will allow airlines to cut emissions and fuel burn by 2% on long–haul flights. The iFlex system builds on the experience of demonstration of ‘perfect flights’ with solutions that can be implemented across several ATC operators in day-to-day operating conditions and using current technology.

The Constellation Energy Group has begun work on a new, third solar array at Denver International Airport which, once operational, will provide 4.4 mega watts of electricity for Denver

per day. Constellation Energy finance, own and operate the solar AIRPORT WORLD/OCTOBER-NOVEMBER 2010 will array,

while the airport will purchase the electricity it produces over a 20-year period.
