Asunción privatisation?

Paraguay’s public works and communications ministry (MOPC) is set to submit a bill to congress recommending the privatisation of Asunción’s Silvio Pettirossi International Airport. The government is reported to be close to

completing a draft of the bill, which could lead to the award of a concession to operate Paraguay’s capital city gateway and potentially up to two regional airports. The International Financing Corporation (IFC)

will carry out technical studies for the potential Asunción airport concession after signing an advisory agreement with the MOPC. In August, the US Trade and Development

BAA to sell stake in Italian airport

BAA will effectively end its status as a global airport operator if the €150 million sale of its controlling interest in Naples Airport is rubber stamped by the end of the year. The agreed sale of its 65% stake in Naples Airport operator, GESAC, to Italian infrastructure fund

Budapest and Naples airports, six Australian gateways, two tranches of the Airports Property Partnership, World Duty Free, and four US retail management contracts. Ferrovial-owned BAA claims that the Naples sale, which is conditional upon Italian competition

clearance and approval by minority shareholders, signals the end the strategic refocusing of its interests away from non-core and international assets to its UK airports. Colin Matthews, BAA’s chief executive, says: “The time is right for Naples International

Airport to move ahead under new owners and for us to sharpen our focus on Heathrow and our other UK airports.”

Investors sought for Philippine gateway

The Philippine island province of Bohol is banking on a partnership between the public and private sectors to bankroll the long-delayed construction of the $140 million Panglao International Airport. Bohol governor, Edgar Chatto, claims that

escalating construction costs mean that the local and national government have insuffi cient funds to build the gateway, which would make Bohol more accessible to international tourists. It is not clear whether the new gateway – set to

be built on government-acquired land some fi ve minutes from Panglao’s white sand beaches – would replace or complement Bohol’s existing airport in capital Tagbilaran City. “A public-private sector partnership is the way

forward for Panglao International Airport,” says Chatto.

Beijing Capital International Airport now boasts a fi ve-star Hilton Hotel following the summer opening of a luxury 320-room complex. “Opening China’s fi rst fi ve-star international airport hotel generations after our founder pioneered the airport hotel concept is more than a noteworthy milestone,” says Dave Horton, global head, Hilton Hotels.
