AIRPORT REPORT: VIETNAM’S AIRPORT SYSTEM

The new Phu Quoc Airport is set to open in late 2012.

Can Tho International Airport has vast development potential, as a quarter of Vietnam’s population live in the Mekong Delta region

Lien Khuong Airport currently serves around 1,000 passengers and

nine tonnes of cargo and mail daily. Passenger traffic at the gateway has increased by an average of 15% a year for the past decade and SAC believes that this figure will be even higher following the opening of the new facilities. SAC’s chairman also believes that Can Tho International Airport

has “vast development potential,” as a quarter of Vietnam’s population live in the Mekong Delta region, which is undergoing rapid economic and social development. The former military airport, located just seven kilometres from

downtown Can Tho City, has been upgraded to such an extent over the last five years that it began handling scheduled domestic flights in January 2009 and now offers services to Hanoi, Phu Quoc and Ho Chi Minh City.

The airport’s domestic terminal and single 3,000m runway

– capable of handling aircraft up to the size of a B747-400 – will shortly be joined by a new 20,750sqm international terminal capable of handling 3mppa. “The new passenger terminal building will change things for Can

Tho,” enthuses Hung. “Although the airport hasn’t been open that long, it has enjoyed incredible growth since day one. Traffic has risen 25% since March 2009, for example, and handling international flights is the obvious next step to take.” Hung, who reveals that $70 million has been invested on

upgrading the gateway, says that SAC and the Vietnamese government will offer an impressive package of incentives to airlines in a bid to encourage them to launch international services from Can Tho.
