AIRPORT REPORT: BERMUDA

Bermuda L

F Wade International Airport (BDA) has made no secret of its desire for a new terminal and Hurricane Igor, which swept through the island nation in September, has only served to re-enforce its determination to get it.

For although the airport escaped relatively unscathed from Igor’s 120 km/h winds, it once again highlighted the fact that a new terminal built on higher ground elsewhere on the airport site would be better equipped to combat hurricanes. The airport learnt the hard way just how bad tropical storms can be

back in 2003 when a tidal surge caused by Hurricane Fabian resulted in six feet of water in the ground fl oor of the existing terminal. A determination to never let this happen again, and the wish

to replace today’s 1940s built terminal with a state-of-the-art complex with greater revenue earning potential, were certainly key considerations for HNTB when developing the gateway’s master plan. “Fabian raised a serious fl ag with everybody about the location of the terminal relative to how the tides go when hurricanes hit

Nicole Nelson discovers that fi nding the funds for a new terminal remains a top priority for Bermuda’s LF Wade International Airport.

Bermuda, so we were asked what could be done to rethink the airport and terminal location and tidal surge protection if the terminal were to be rebuilt in place or relocate elsewhere,” says Owen Curtis, associate vice president and director of eastern aviation with HNTB. “Our recommendation was to relocate a new terminal to a position

northwest of the existing terminal that is better protected geographically from the sea surge of a hurricane, as well as in terms of modern design.” Since HNTB turned in its fi nal master planning documentation in

2009, the airport has been lobbying in favour of the fi rm’s suggested proposal that integrates the airport facility with the overall development of the island nation. As Bermuda is a series of islands, master plan development

opportunities outlined for BDA include a marina and intermodal facility for buses, water-taxis and ferries that would service the new airport terminal.
