MARTINAIR Holland, the Dutch carrier that forms part of theAir France-KLMairline grouping, is to terminate all passenger operations by the end of 2011 in order to concentrate fully on its freight activities. Martinair said that it would
continue flying passengers up to that time, with KLMthen taking over a number of its network destinations. Themove has long been
forecast, withMartinair Cargo being regarded as a viable ongoing concern but the sacrifice of the airline’s passenger operation being seen as a possible cost- saving strategy.
AFGHAN CARRIER Safi Airways has axed services fromKabul to Kuwait while it restructures. The carrier’s B767-200ER is available for ACMI lease and its two B737-300s are for sale. The airline is left with oneA320 flying double-daily services between Kabul and Dubai and anA340-300 operating five times a week to Frankfurt.
RUSSIA’S Transaero Airlines is to inaugurate weekly non- stop B747-400 services between Moscow- Domodedovo International airport and Rio de Janeiro on 3 January.
Chinese all-cargo combination

in its fleet: twoB747-400ERFs, threeB777Fs, fiveMD-11Fs andthreeA300-600Fs. When China Eastern last year acquired Shanghai Airlines, it had suggested the
cargosubsidiariesof thetwoairlinescouldbeunifiedtocounter foreignprominence inamarketdominatedbyforeign-ownedairlinesandintegrators rather thandomestic operators. ShanghaiAirlinesCargooperates fourMD-11FsandtwoB757Fs tosixinternational
destinations, includingChicago, LosAngeles andAnchorage intheUS. Earlier this year, China Eastern acquired a 51 percent stake in GreatWall, which
operates a fleet of three B747-400 freighters out of Shanghai-Pudong working international routes tomarkets inEurope, theUS andAsia. The stakeholders in GreatWall include Singapore Airlines, while China Ocean
Shipping Group and Taipei-based EVA Airways hold stakes in China Cargo and ShanghaiAirlinesCargo, respectively. Inadditiontothenewly-formedcombinedcarrier,AirChina isexpectedtolaunch
ajointventurecargoairlinebasedinShanghai inconjunctionwithHongKong-based Cathay Pacific, althoughfull regulatory approval is still required.
Qatar maintains rapid network expansion
QATAR AIRWAYS added a third daily frequency on its Bangkok services on 1 November,with the flights continuing to Hanoi or Ho ChiMinh City inVietnam. In another network expansion on the
Far East sector, the carrier added six flights a week to Phuket in Thailand on 12 October,with the service routeing via Kuala Lumpur. Qatar is also launching three times a

weekA319 flights toStuttgarton9March. The carrier operates an all-cargo link
between its Doha hub and Frankfurt served by its new 103-tonne payload B777-200 freighter. Munich – the capital of the southern
stateof Bavaria –willbe served11 times a week from March with A330 widebody aircraft, an increase fromthe current daily frequency.
