IN BRIEF

ABU DHABI-BASED Etihad Crystal Cargo inaugurated a twice-weekly connection to Hong Kong on 13 October, using the capacity of the A330-200 freighter that entered service recently. The connection represents the freight carrier’s fourth all-cargo service to China after Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Etihad Crystal Cargo senior vice president Roy Kinnear hailed Kong Hong as “an important strategic addition to our freight network”.

construction industries, even if not rocketing, are seeing an upward trend. General consumables such as phones and clothing (the mainstay of ABC’s traffic) are also growing.” Russia imports high-tech goods, construction

equipment, pharmaceuticals and top-end fashion items from other European countries. China and the Far East region supply it with general consumer goods. Gliznoutsa went on: “China is the big manufacturer. ABC

has a successful operation there, and it has diversified its routeing strategy to adapt flexibly to market demand. We have tried to get closer to the production lines and shippers, and also to the receivers of their goods.” For example, ABC added flights to Paris in mid-September in response to demand from its customers for more capacity out of the French capital. He noted the use of ABC’s 110-tonne payload B747

freighters on ad hoc charters where the schedule allows, enabling the group to work outside its usual network, even if on a small scale. Any more long-term network developments are limited

by the number of aircraft in the fleet, he said. But: “The US and Canada are on the plan, and probably South America too,” he hinted, depending on demand. And on that subject, Gliznoutsa concluded: “Of course,

without demand from our customers we wouldn’t even exist.”

AIR LOGISTICSCHINA 39

AGHANISTAN-BASED Safi Airways has stopped services from Kabul to Kuwait while it restructures its business. The carrier’s B767-200ER is available for ACMI leases and its two B737-300s are for sale. The airline is left with one A320, which operates double-daily services between Kabul and Dubai and one A340-300 operating five times a week to Frankfurt.

ILYUSHIN FINANCE Company and Russian cargo carrier Polet Airlines have reached an agreement on the terms of a lease contract for the airline’s fourth 92-tonne payload IL-96-400T freighter. The aircraft will be delivered to Polet in March next year.
