Boeing sets new date for first B747-8F delivery B
Shanahan – confident in the value that the B747-8F will bring
OEING has set a revised delivery schedule for its new B747-8 freighter. Initial delivery of the aircraft is now expected in the middle of next year.
In revealing the news, the US aircraft
manufacturer has also reported on additional steps that it is taking to support the revised schedule. These extrameasures include adding a
fifth B747-8F to the flight-test fleet, Boeing CommercialAirplanes noted. TheSeattle-baseddivisionofBoeingsaid the decision was taken following “a
thorough assessment of the expected cumulative impact”of some discoveriesmade during the aircraft’s flight-testing programme. Theseproblems have caused“disruptions to certification testing”, Boeingadmitted,whichthecompanyhasbeenunabletowork into
the existing tight schedule – and this is all on top of the previous delays in the B747-8F delivery schedule. “We understand the issues encountered in flight test and are
working through the solutions,” insisted Pat Shanahan, Boeing vice president and generalmanager, airplane programs. “Werecogniseour customersareeager toaddthe747-8freighter
to their fleets, and we understand and regret any impact this schedule changemay have on their plans to begin servicewith the airplane.” Yet Shanahan added: “With that said, the 747-8 freighter is
demonstratingthecapabilitiesour customersneedtobesuccessful andweareconfident inthevalueitwillbringuponcertificationand delivery next year.” Boeing has confirmed that the delay is unlikely to have any
“material impact”on its 2010 financial results. Sofar,Boeinghas receivedorders for76modelsof the140-tonne
payload B747-8F aircraft from airlines in Asia, Europe and North America.
