OPENNESS & COLLABORATION
A NEWS SYSTEM FOR COST-CONSCIOUS NEWS TEAMS
Avid NewsVision, a highly-scalable, end-to-end digital news production system, has launched, aimed at local and regional broadcasters. Such organisations are faced with increased demand for the continuous capture, creation and distribution of HD file- based productions across multiple platforms, on constrained budgets. NewsVision includes a four-channel Avid AirSpeed Multi Stream ingest and playout server, providing fast, high quality ingest and playout support in a single compact chassis. New remote console software enables AirSpeed server control from any desktop and supports quick file transfer, reducing the potential for errors by enabling automated clip check-in and transfer to storage. A total of five editing clients, in any combination of Media Composer and NewsCutter, provides fully featured editing and fast camera-to-edit workflow, with support for popular industry file-based camera formats via Avid Media Access (AMA). An open workflow foundation also supports third party applications like Apple Final Cut Pro and AP ENPS. NewsVision costs £106,500, including 32TB of ISIS 5000 shared storage with 20 client connections.
GRADING PANEL PARTNERS Autodesk’s Smoke for Mac, The Foundry’s STORM and Red’s RedCine- X applications all now provide native support for the MC Color, enabling hands-on control of their colour grading features. Providing increased tactile control of projects, MC Color features high-res optical trackballs, track wheels, displays, encoders and programmable keys for superior feel and integrated control – all are features usually only found on much more expensive control surfaces.
AVID OPENS WORKFLOW WITH PRO TOOLS|HD NATIVE
BOOMERANG BUYS UNITY ISIS Leading Welsh production company Boomerang has invested in 64TB of Avid Unity ISIS storage to help manage assets more effectively and upgrade storage capabilities at its Cardiff headquarters. Boomerang produces a wide range of programming from children’s entertainment to extreme sports (including Freestyle on 4, pictured) on 25 Avid Media Composers and three Pro Tools audio dubbing suites.
Taking advantage of the rapid advancement in computer processor performance, Avid has introduced Pro Tools|HD Native, a version of its audio system that runs entirely on computer CPU processing power. The system supports both Windows 7 and Mac Snow Leopard 10.6 or higher and features a new Pro Tools|HD Native PCIe card (pictured) and Pro Tools HD software. It provides simplified, open workflows for recording, editing and mixing, without the additional dedicated processing hardware included in larger Pro Tools|HD systems. For the best audio quality, Pro Tools|HD Native uses Pro Tools HD Series interfaces for up to 64 channels of premium audio conversion and I/O. Support for SYNC HD enables accurate synchronisation to picture for post production workflows. For integrated monitoring and tactile control, the system integrates with Avid ICON and C|24 work surfaces, and features lossless session and project interchange with other Pro Tools and Avid video editing systems for simplified collaboration.
The Pro Tools|HD Native PCIe card enables users to easily establish a low latency monitor path directly in the Pro Tools system, with the push of a button, for ‘set and forget’ direct monitoring while tracking. Meanwhile third-party DAW support for Core Audio and ASIO drivers enables broad compatibility with third-party audio applications, such as Apple Logic, Steinberg Cubase, and others. The Pro Tools | HD Native system will be available from November 5, starting at £2,510.
