MAKING THE NEWS

“Communities (a feature of iNEWS 3.1) allows two iNEWS systems to join, so that people logged on at different systems can see each other”

With 2,800 journalists across the world, the business intelligence providers Reuters is a global digital news operation, keeping up-to-the-minute with breaking news and in-depth reporting. The Avid iNEWS solution underpins Reuters’ operations in over 100 offices globally, giving journalists the tools to create and share content and to deliver news more efficiently. Reuters upgraded to iNEWS 3.1 this

summer. Having upgraded the servers, the new software was pushed out across the network in one go. Reuters operates two servers based in London for 95 per cent of its network. Its new financial video news service, Insider, accounts for the other five per cent. Based in New York, Insider has its own server. With the upgrade now installed across the rest of Reuters, the next step is to upgrade iNEWS at Insider,

which will bring the ‘Communities’ feature into play.

“Communities allows two iNEWS systems to join, so that people logged on at different systems can see each other,” explains Julian Wells, Thomson Reuters global head of visual services. The feature allows station groups and networks to share content and to collaborate on stories by providing users with the ability to view, edit and search for content on any of their iNEWS systems. Another capability of Avid iNEWS 3.1 that appealed to Reuters newsrooms was the availability of drop-down lists, which minimise typographical errors. The upgraded system enables further control with calendar fields and check boxes that automatically help news editors to set formats.

Reuters is also making use of Brainstorm BrainNews, an MOS-

compatible On Air Graphics control system, which enables news departments to integrate real-time 3d graphics into their workflow, without the need for input from designers. iNEWS 3.1 supports the system, which, for Reuters, is useful for turning data, such as real time market prices, into TV graphics. Given that hardware also needed replacing, Wells thought it good timing to invest in Masstech’s media asset management solution for archiving. On top of this, a fundamental reason for the iNEWS upgrade is to do with Reuters’ disaster recovery plans. “We have a pair of servers in London that look after each other,” says Wells. “But if the building was to be shut down because of a dirty bomb or something like that, we wanted another server talking to the mother ship and able to work on its own if there was a problem.”
