HEAD OF ONLINE, CLEAR CUT Making the most of still images in the edit using pan and zoom

“Use Avid Pan and Zoom for all your still images during the edit. It’s the best way to have good looking still images/rostrums. We always replace all the stills used in a programme with this effect and link to the original image file. It gives you the most options for pans and moves, so your photos look nice and can all be key-framed to perfection. And editors, have just one bin for your final sequence – and just have one final sequence.”

Here are a series of useful picture editing tips from editors working in some the UK’s leading post houses

JIM ALLISON MD, M8MEDIA

“When entering a nested effect, hold down alt (windows) or option (mac) and click the step in button to give you the ability to edit within the nest but see the result as you work. Exit again using alt or option and click the step out button.”

CHRIS MCKAY EDITOR, CUT + RUN

“If you highlight any clips in a bin and hit the clear marks from the keyboard, it will clear marks on all selected clips. Option- clicking on any purple rectangle next to an effect or colour correction parameter resets it to the original factory default, while command clicking will show the default setting without changing it.”

LUKE CARTER

ONLINE EDITOR, ENVY How best to use Avid’s pre-set sharpen functions

“When using a sharpen preset, make your footage black and white, layer the colour on top and play with the transparency of the colour. You can also use the sharpen mode, processing only the green channel (holding most of the black and white content). When tracking a hard shot you can crank up the contrast on the shot using the colour corrector. Once you've got a stable track, bypass the grade. This keeps the tracking info without changing the colour of the image.”

NICK GRIFFITHS

SENIOR EDITOR, EVOLUTIONS “When working with fiddly effects you can zoom into the record monitor to work in more detail. Once in the effect editor, by pressing control L to zoom in and then by holding down ctrl and alt you can move around the zoomed in screen by moving the hand icon with the mouse. Great for blurring small number plates or logos accurately”

LUKE CARTER ONLINE EDITOR, ENVY

“When linking a file, select Copy-Link to copy the file into the media drives before linking, for faster access – instead of linking across a network.

Michael Burns profiles two up- and-coming editors currently working their way up the ranks

DEBBIE HATTINGH CLEAR CUT PICTURES

Debbie Hattingh is the new online and grading assistant at Clear Cut Pictures. “This mostly involves providing support to the online editors and colourists,” she says. ”I perform conforms, ensure programmes are ready for the online/grade, and liaise with the post producers and MCR to ensure the smooth running of onlines and grades. Occasionally I also get to perform pre-grades, small onlines and grades.” After a BA in Audiovisual Production Management and a stint as a runner, Hattingh spent time in the MCR at Clear Cut Pictures where a lot of her free time was spent receiving training from online editors and colourists. “My main ambition is to be a colourist, however my ambitions definitely include online editing as well,” she says. “I find Avid Symphony Nitris to be very user friendly and reliable. The colour correction tool is able to grade by tape name or source, so you can grade one shot and every other shot with that tape name has the same grade applied.”

KIRSTIN GLOVER EDITWORKS SCOTLAND

Kirstin Glover is a freelance editor cutting broadcast programmes using Avid Media Composer and finishing using Avid Symphony Nitris. She currently works out of Editworks Scotland where she cuts shows such as In It To Win It and Who Dares Wins for 12 Yard Productions. Glover found her passion for post production while studying TV Production and Operations at college and landed her first job in TV as an edit assistant working on snowboarding videos in Canada. This experience led to a permanent position at a post house in Scotland where Glover very quickly rose through the ranks to staff editor and went freelance this year.

“Avid’s powerful multi camera editing abilities make it the tool of choice for me,” she says. “Particularly when editing Light Entertainment shows such as In It To Win It. Working with Avid Unity is invaluable when part of an edit team as sharing both media and bins is so simple,” she adds.
