NXCAM The newest Sony camera format, NXCAM, records to affordable Memory Stick Pro Duo flash memory cards, SDHC flash memory cards, or the 128GB HXR-FMU128 flash memory unit. The first model in the NXCAM range – the HXR-NX5E – was launched at the start of the year and records 1920x1080 images at 24Mb/s. The camera also has a GPS function which embeds GPS metadata when recording, enabling you to quickly find footage from specific geographical locations.

HDV HYBRID The HDV format is Sony’s entry-level tape-based format so isn’t a file-based format. However, newer HDV cameras – the HVR-Z5E, HVR-Z7E and HVR-S270 – are hybrid models with the ability to record to both HDV tape and Compact Flash memory cards. This makes it possible to go tapeless when you deem it appropriate. It also means you can acquire onto tape for archiving while simultaneously recording to solid state memory. It’s possible to record up to 72 minutes of video on a single 16GB Compact Flash card.
