NICK GRIFFITHS SENIOR EDITOR EVOLUTIONS
As a staff editor at Evolutions, Nick Griffiths uses Media Composer and Avid Symphony daily, and is proficient in both, with particular experience in effects and grading tools. “Although Pogle and Baselight are popular at the moment and are obviously great at the job they do, when done well, a Symphony grade can look awesome,” he says. When it comes to onlining a programme in Symphony, Griffiths has quite a methodical way of working, focusing on separate elements at a time, which makes his work fast and efficient. “I start by doing the grade,” he explains. “First ensuring all the cameras match and the white balance is correct, then giving the shots a look. Then I do a blanking and effects pass, checking all shots are filling the screen and that all the effects are working correctly. This includes adding glows or transitions, recreating and tidying up offline effects, followed by importing stills using the Avid Pan & Zoom effect. Finally I’ll go through and do a caption pass, adding names and credits. Once we’re happy we will review the show and play out to tape, Digi or, increasingly, HDCAM SR.”
Griffiths is no stranger to challenging jobs: “Clients always keep you on your toes, asking for weird and wonderful things,” he says. “From multi layered picture in pictures to blurring out wig lines on actors. There’s always a challenge.” A key show in his career has been Gordon Ramsay’s F Word. “It’s a great looking show and fun to work on,” he says. “The deadlines were quite up against it, often changing things at the last minute – keeping the show current and topical.” Griffiths has also done quite a bit for Maverick. “Embarrassing Bodies made me squirm a bit, but was good fun. Likewise, Bizarre E.R. for BBC3, now in its third series – I think I’m a sucker for gory TV!”
It’s not all blood and guts though as Griffiths is also a seasoned pro at grading RDF’s Shipwrecked, having just finished its fifth series: “It’s a hard life making the bunch of shipwrecked guys and gals pretty on a deserted tropical island,” he says. “I’m lucky to have worked with Studio Lambert recently too, including completing its Three in a Bed series.” “The Apprentice and Top Gear are also shows that I regularly online and work on,” he adds. “It’s just a pleasure to work on some of the best shows on TV in the UK.”
