This is the cornerstone of
Developing and delivering a programme such as Work Ready comes at a price measured in many thousands of dollars. It is notable that fundraising among BEC membership was made easier by a clear recognition that such a programme would be benefi cial to both students and potential employers. We are very grateful to the HSBC Bank of Bermuda, the Association of Bermuda International Companies, Island Glass, Butterfi eld Bank, Total Marketing & Communication, BCM McAlpine, Media House, Bermuda Air Conditioning and The Market Place for demonstrating in a tangible way their commitment to the next generation of Bermuda’s workforce.
It may seem obvious that young people need to be well prepared for the world of work. But it often means less to young people unless they fully understand and internalise it. Bermuda’s employers need graduates, either directly from school or after further education, to fi ll positions in all sectors of our economy. The opportunities here are boundless. It is work that sustains our everyday lives, pays the bills, buys the cars, prepares us for family life and maintains Bermuda’s economic well-being. There are, however, as the participating students have learned, expectations placed on them by employers. No one is owed a living—it has to be earned. This is the cornerstone of our efforts with Work Ready, to help better prepare our young people to get started on a journey into the world of work so that they can realise their full potential.
Employers, students and Bermuda as a whole will reap the benefi ts of programmes such as Work Ready. The BEC, supported by our sponsors, intends to develop our involvement with our young people for the benefi t of us all.
