My advice to students thinking
about career options is to apply for as many scholarships and work placements as you can. The Amlin Bermuda scholarship provides a great route into the reinsurance market.
which means that junior members of the team get a good sense of how underwriters negotiate with brokers, analyse policies and interact with one another. The open plan office also means that junior staff members are not intimidated by office doors when they have a query.
“Education and further professional development are constantly promoted at Amlin. I started with the company in August 2007 and, by June 2008, had achieved my general insurance certificate, followed by the associate in underwriting qualification in June 2009. I am currently working towards the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) qualification.
“In support, Amlin gives study leave for exams and offers team training sessions, group presentations and in-house seminars. Some training is even offered overseas; I have completed courses at the Katie School of Insurance and Financial Services in Chicago. Soon I will be travelling to Amlin’s London headquarters for a three- month training secondment, which will also include business trips to Switzerland, Denmark and the Netherlands.
“I really do feel the opportunity to excel is at my fingertips.
“I think it is extremely important to make the most of scholarship and training opportunities. I graduated from the Berkeley Institute, Bermuda, with honours, and this entitled me to a tuition-free scholarship at the Bermuda College. My advice to students thinking about career options is to apply for as many scholarships and work placements as you can.
“The Amlin Bermuda scholarship provides a great route into the reinsurance market. I certainly haven’t regretted making the move into the industry; three years with Amlin has given me the necessary building blocks towards a solid career in reinsurance. My goal is to become an underwriter within the next three to five years and maybe I will make underwriting director in the future. It will take a lot of hard work to get there, but you have to aim high.”
