What careers should Bermudians pursue?


Bermudians need to understand where the jobs are today, where they will be tomorrow and where they are likely to be in the foreseeable future. Wayne Smith explains.


guide Bermudians to study and pursue education, qualifications and certifications in professions where there are opportunities, rather than merely studying subjects that they like. In these recessionary times, pursuing a discipline in which one can find employment is critical.

Today, we are in the midst of the deepest recession since the 1930s, and many experts predict that the current economic downturn is likely to continue until and possibly beyond 2015. This underscores the importance of pursuing education and qualifications in areas where there are employment opportunities.


To quantify the professions that we recommend below, earlier this year, the National Training Board conducted a gap analysis, using data from the Department of Immigration, to identify careers with


here appears to be a disconnect between people’s interests and aptitudes in certain fields, and the existence of vacancies in those professions. Therefore, in 2010, The Department of Labour and Training recognised a need to

Within the next few years, we expect to see new hotel developments. In November 2010, the Bermuda Hospitals Board expects to break ground on a massive, multimillion dollar, 30-year hospital development project. This job will require hundreds of construction workers, and the Government expects that many Bermudians will be able to find employment during construction of this new hospital. In addition to the conventional construction disciplines, there is a requirement to have persons trained in modern construction techniques, many of which differ from traditional approaches to building in Bermuda. Specifically, some of the drywall application and formwork erection techniques are new and different. Bermudian construction workers must, wherever possible, get some exposure to these new methods of building.


When the hospital is completed, there will be work in the new state- of-the-art hospital. But we don’t just need physicians, nurses and
