period of three years full-time upon graduation. Scholarship students are expected to also complete either their Certifi ed Public Accountancy (CPA) or Chartered Accountancy (CA) course of professional study.
Gil says that higher standards of education and the rise of the reinsurance industry have opened a lot of doors for talented young Bermudians. “As we work to continue building our business by attracting the best and brightest candidates, especially those indigenous to the Island, we will, through this and other programmes like the EY Values Award programme, strengthen our brand and position ourselves as key members of the local business communities.” The scholarship is intended not only to help Bermudians, but also to show them the potential success they could have in the industry.
The potential for professional and fi nancial success is huge. “It may sound clichéd, but it truly is a ‘work hard, play hard’ environment; what you put in to the job here will come back as rewards 10-fold,” Gil says. “Shoot for the goal of being a partner at one of the fi rms, and if you succeed, you’ll do very well. It’s a great career.”
Ernst & Young Ltd also provides opportunities for its employees to move abroad with the company. The scholarship programme
also covers the the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas and, most recently, the British Virgin Islands Ernst & Young employees have ample opportunity to move between those locations, as well as gain international experience in other major fi nancial services markets, such as New York City and London.“We operate on a truly integrated, global basis,” Gil says. “Our employees may get an opportunity to go abroad and those mobility opportunities will enrich the experience of working for a fi rm like Ernst & Young.”
Applications for the scholarship programme are accepted and reviewed on an annual basis from January 1 to June 1 each year; a selection committee awards the scholarship at the end of June each year. Additional details of the scholarship deadlines and criteria are posted on the Ernst & Young website (
