Johnson sweeps in with London service centre

Johnston Sweepers has opened a London-based service centre at Redbridge in Essex, adding to its exten- sive nationwide service network to provide even faster after sales support facilities for customers. Situated northeast on the North Circular, the Redbridge depot will reduce travel times for call-outs within the M25. The new depot is a fully equipped engineering centre, incorporating state- of-the-art workshop facilities with secure storage, and is able to provide a range of servicing and major repairs. Johnston’s network of service depots around the country claims to be unique to the UK sweeper industry, with six

regional centres providing local service support and parts availability. Each cen- tre also operates a team of mobile serv- ice technicians. John Halley, Johnston’s customer

services manager, comments: “A national service infrastructure is vital to support our products in the field, but the capital has always presented chal- lenges owing to the difficulties of get- ting around in London and longer trav- elling times. The new service centre in Redbridge is perfectly positioned to offer customers within the M25 a faster and higher level of customer service.”

Gasrec deal gears up for greener fleet operations

Gasrec, commercial producer of liquid biomethane (LBM), has signed a deal with Gas Container Services (GCS), in which GCS will provide refuelling facil- ities to commercial fleet owners for Gasrec’s LBM. It will also transport bio- methane fuel round the UK from Gasrec’s processing plant in Albury, Surrey, to service specific contracts. GCS, which designs and builds vehi- cle gas fuelling facilities and supplies gas fuel throughout the UK, already has an LBM and LCBM refuelling station in Nottingham, from which it fuels its own large vehicles with Gasrec’s LBM fuel. Gasrec LBM is produced by extract- ing the natural gas produced by biomass in landfill, or by digestion of the bio- mass by-products of industries such as food manufacture and retail. This gas is then converted to LBM and used to fuel gas-powered and duel-fuel vehicles, or for decentralised power generation. Gasrec is a preferred supplier of LBM fuel to Iveco, and is working with coun-

cils, commercial fleet owners and heavy vehicle owners to provide vehicles run- ning on biomethane.

Richard Barski, managing director of GCS, says: “There are now high-quality right hand drive vehicles on the market that will run on gas. The beauty of Gasrec’s LBM is that it is UK-sourced, sustainable, high purity and dry. Costs and availability are not therefore dependent on a fluctuating import driv- en marketplace LBM is competitive - larger fleets could save in excess of 20% in fuel costs over diesel by using LBM.” Richard Lilleystone, CEO for Gasrec, adds: “The programme addresses the reclamation of the retained energy in waste and the provision of UK-produced sustainable carbon-neutral fuel. We have major manufacturers making vehi- cles to run on LBM, and we now see the beginnings of having the infrastructure to deliver it to fleets across the UK.”

Discussions with many smaller fleet operators have shown that most are taking steps to invest in fuel management systems that will help them to become more cost efficient in readiness for an upturn in the UK economy, according to Merridale. To meet this requirement, Merridale has developed an entry- level depot fuelling system designed for single depot firms and smaller transport operators. The company says that depot facilities offer benefits including total control, fuel cost advantages and no risk of fraud. Merridale’s Eco R Series is easy to operate and convenient for self service, using standard forecourt nozzles. It uses the Merridale Datakey and can include vehicle and driver identification coupled with odometer entry verified with Merridale iProve authentication.
