SKILLS & TRAINING JCB skills boost for plant operators

JCB and the National Construction College have set up JCB Wastemaster Operator Training courses to ensure skills training keeps pace with growth in the expanding sector. The courses are for plant operators in waste and recycling, helping them achieve con- struction plant competence scheme (CPCS) accreditation. Machinery covered includes wheeled loading shovels, tracked and wheeled excavators and Loadall telescopic han- dlers. Participants will be taught correct re-handling and loading techniques, and driving skills to improve machine per- formance and output to help reduce fuel consumption and tyre wear.

The course will include both class- room and hands-on sessions and will be held over five days. James Richardson,

JCB’s general manager for waste and recycling, says: “Delegates will come away from the courses not only with a comprehensive knowledge of using machines in a safe and competent manner, but also of how to operate

them with optimum efficiency, reduc- ing damage to both machine and sur- roundings while keeping operating costs to a minimum.”

Case study reveals benefits of sustainable collaboration

L-R: Andrew Clarke, MD of Demag, with HR executive Jennifer Cross and production manager Frank Reynolds

Lifting equipment manufacturer Demag Cranes & Components has received certification to environmental standard ISO 14001, and the health and safety standard OHSAS 18001. In an industry which has potential for workplace accident and injury, not least in terms of the risk of working at height, an effective occupational health and safety management system is critical to the well being of employees, contractors and third parties. In achieving OHSAS certification, Demag has demonstrated a structured approach to haz- ard identification, risk assessment and documen- tation, to create safer working environments.

An independent study of a collabora- tion between Middlesex University and The Wastepack Group has identi- fied innovative approaches within the venture, which may be of benefit to similar projects in the future. Wastepack has supported the creation of a new Certificate in Recycling for Sustainability at Middlesex University, which is the subject of a newly pub- lished case study by Dr Laurence Solkin of City University.

Dr Solkin explains: “The study examines how the relationship was created and developed and describes how value is derived from the exchange of skills, knowledge and understanding between industry and academia.” He points out that few, if any, case studies have been produced to explore how such business engage- ment operates, and suggests that this project offers a potential model for future collaborations. The project started in 2004 when the growth in importance of recycling and sustainability began to generate a major requirement for management

skills in these areas. Wastepack believed that there was a need for an additional practical qualification at university level that could be avail- able across the UK as an add-on to existing management capabilities. The company wrote to all UK uni- versities inviting expressions of inter- est in submitting programmes that would help to increase the UK man- agement skills base in recycling. Middlesex University was selected because of the quality of its proposal and its international reputation for innovation in work-based learning. The certificate programme is offered by The Centre for Environment & Safety Management for Business at Middlesex University and is focused on learning in the workplace through workbooks and practical projects. Around 250 students have so far regis- tered for the certificate. The pro- gramme is also accredited by CIWM. Wastepack has invested around £200,000 in this project over five years.
