USA TRIATHLON REGIONS
ROCKY MOUNTAIN
The 2010 race season is in the books. The quality of events in the Rocky Mountain Region has never been better. Abundant opportunities exist for current and future multi sport athletes to find and participate in a wide variety of events that are all geared to each individual’s preference. Many sprint triathlons are specifi cally designed for first-timers, women only or the seasoned veteran. For those who prefer not to engage in all three sports, there are dozens of duathlon, aquabike, and aquathlon events throughout the Rocky Mountain Region. Getting started has never been easier. Clubs are located in all major cities and many smaller towns and are a great place to begin. For further information, visit www.usatriathlon.org or www.usatrmr.com.

Congratulations to the Loveland Lake to Lake Triathlon for hosting a fantastic regional championship event. Conditions were perfect and the race director and volunteers lived up to all expectations for a championship event. The championship events for 2011 are the TriUtah Echo Triathlon (Regional Championship), Loveland Lake to Lake (Special Qualifier) and the Atomic Man Duathlon (Duathlon Regional Championship). Additional optional designations may be added later. Race directors are urged to contact council chair Alan Ley at ironmanv@aol.com for considerati on as a future championship host.

This year, the Rocky Mountain Regional Council has been placing a Rocky Mountain Region tent at various events throughout the region with great success. The intent is to have a race site locati on for family and friends to meet pre- and post-race and find information on USAT programs. We also have on hand helmets, goggles, shoelaces, etc. for last minute emergencies. Finally, due to the large area of the Rocky Mountain Region, the council is looking to appoint additional council members. Any interested USAT member is urged to contact Alan Ley for consideration.

FLORIDA
USA Triathlon Florida Regional Council is proud to announce another first for Florida: starting in 2011, we will be hosti ng a Paratriathlon Regional Championship on July 16, 2011 in Jacksonville, Fla.

One of the most amazing and special experiences of being a USA Triathlon member is the opportunity for us to train and race together in multi sport with inclusion and acceptance for all, regardless of diff erences in age, gender, or level of ability or disability.

Triathlon is the only sport – anywhere – in which disabled athletes compete side-by-side with able-bodied athletes at local, national and international levels.

We had a chance to catch up with Rajesh “Raj” Durbal, a Florida USA Triathlon member and paratriathlete, who had this to say about our new Regional Qualifier and our growing USA Paratriathlon programs:

“The (USA Triathlon) paratriathlon program is a great way to get physically challenged people out there competing and living an active lifestyle. I like the fact that we have a series of races; it’s nice because we can gauge where we are in our training and compete with athletes in our division. It also motivates me to train harder, if I see someone with similar disabilities faster than me. They show me that there is more juice left in the tank to squeeze out! My life has more direction now since getting involved in the program. I can train for a series of races and stay disciplined to improve year after year. That helps in life, because it teaches me discipline, sacrifice and good work ethics; which ultimately make me independent rather than dependent!”

Well said, Raj.

To all of our members, we thank you for the opportunity to serve you! Train safe, and we’ll see you at the races!
