I live in Jupiter, Fla., and flew all the way to San Diego for the National Championship. I have been doing triathlons since I was 6 years old, and have done them all over Florida. I started when my big brother did one and liked it, so I decided to try. This was the first one I did in a different state, and it was the coolest one. We had fun in San Diego and it was neat seeing the flags from all of the states around transition. I liked seeing the Marines marching on the Marine base. When we tried to find where to park for the triathlon, my parents asked a marine where to go. It was funny because he said “sir, this recruit does not know the answer, sir.” After that, it was a family joke that my parents would ask me a question, and I would say, sir, this triathlete does not know the answer, sir. Swimming in the bay was fun, but the water was freezing - we don’t have cold water like that in Florida.

The National Championship, San Diego Zoo, Sea World, the Padres, Balboa Park, Disneyland and the beaches. What more could you ask for? Maybe a top-five finish? My dad once told me you must set your goals, work
hard, remain focused, and anything is possible! So about a year ago I decided I was going to compete at the
National Championships in San Diego. First, the hard part. I had to convince my parents to take me there. I drew
up a training schedule and calendared the races I wanted to participate in. Then I presented my plan to my dad.
He said if I could beat all local competition he would take me to Nationals. That was the first step! With a plan in writing, the training began.

Ready, set, go! I tell myself as I run into the icy water. Aft er my swim warm-up I was shaking from the cold
water and had goose bumps everywhere! But I wasn’t nervous, and Iknew I was ready. The swim was freezing! When I first went in everything went numb. But the swim didn’t feel that long, because it was only 200 meters.
As I was swimming, I started to feel warmer because I was swimming fast. The bike course was great! It was flat and had lots of straightaways where you could go really fast and pass people. On the bike, I felt like I was going faster than I normally would have.
