FAST TRANSISTIONS = FASTER TIMES

One question I hear from kids all the time is, ‘how do I get faster?’ Isn’t that what we all want – to be faster? Most triathletes are so focused on the swim, bike and the run, that they forget that the clock is still running during transitions. Mastering your transitions may be the easiest way to knock seconds or even minutes off your overall time. Here are a few transition tips that might help make your times faster:


1. Mark your transition area with something unique so that you know exactly where to find your bike. Using a bright yellow transition towel or tying a red balloon to your bike rack will help you find your transiti on area easier.


2. Keep your area organized. Make it as simple as possible for you to find your shoes, hat, helmet,
transition towel, etc.


3. Use elastic quick ties on your running shoes so that you can quickly slip them on without having to tie your laces.


4. If you are using cycling shoes, have them on your bike and ready to go. I wrap a rubber band around the heel of one of my cycling shoes and the rear chain stay to keep my shoes level before I mount my bike.


5. Run your bike in and out of transition. Any ti me you can run, do it. You will have a faster time.


6. Finally, practice, practice and practice. Set up a transiton area in your driveway and go through all your steps. Spray your toes with a hose and practice putting your shoes on with wet feet. Practice putti ng your helmet on as fast as you can. Just like all the other disciplines of your race, practice will be the key to cutting down your times. The sport of triathlon continues to get faster and faster. The difference between first and second place may only be a few seconds. Don’t let your transitions slow you down. May all your transitions be fast and smooth!
