AT THE RACES
McDOWELL CLAIMS BRONZE TO LEAD U.S. JUNIORS IN BUDAPEST
The future of triathlon in the United States delivered on the international stage Sept. 12 as bronze medalist Kevin McDowell led a quartet of Americans to top-10 fi nishes at the ITU Junior World Championship.

Also a silver medalist at last month’s YouthOolympic Games, McDowell (Geneva, Ill.) logged a time of 52 minutes, 22 seconds on the sprint-distance course (750m swim, 19.03k bike, 5k run) through the center of Budapest. Fellow Chicago-area athlete Lukas Verzbicas (orland Hills, Ill.) worked his way to fourth in 52:36 thanks to a blazing run split.

Youth Olympic Games bronze medalist kelly Whitley (Geneva, Ill.) nearly found her way to the podium again with a fourth-place finish in 59:20, and USA Triathlon junior elite national champion Tanelle Berard (Clive, Iowa) was seventh in 59:46.

Age Group Olympic
Team USA capped an impressive week of international multi sport action with nine world titles and 25 medals in the ITU Age Group Olympic-distance World Championship on Sept. 12.

The 25 medals are the most by an American triathlon contingent on European soil since Team USA garnered 28 medals in Manchester, England, in 1993. In all, the American age-groupers combined for 52 medals, including 15 gold, over the course of the last five days in the aquathlon, sprint and olympic-distance world championship events.

Paratriathlon
Megan Fisher (Missoula, Mont.), Matt Perkins (Boise, Idaho) and Melissa Stockwell (Oak Park, Ill.) were victorious in their respective categories to highlight eight U.S. medalists in the ITU Paratriathlon World Championship.

Age Group Sprint
Donald Ardell (St. Petersburg, Fla.) was a repeat winner in the male 70-74 age group, while Jessica Imm (Davenport, Iowa) and Tracy DiSabato-Aust (Sunbury, Ohio) claimed their first ITU medals with gold in the female 25-29 and 50-54 age groups, respectively, in the ITU Age Group Sprint World Championship. In all, the U.S. raced its way to 13 medals – three gold, four silver and six bronze – in the sprint event, which consisted of a 750m swim, 20k bike and 5k run.

U23
Lauren Goldstein-Kral (Shaker Heights, ohio) took ninth in the ITU Under-23 World Championship, covering the Olympic-distance event (1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run) in 2:00:19. She was 12th in the same event a year ago.

AQUATHLON
Team USA sprinted its way to 14 medals, including a trio of first-place finishes, at the ITU Aquathlon World Championships held on Sept. 8. The event was shortened to a 1,000-meter wetsuit swim followed by a 2.5-kilometer run, instead of a pair of 2.5k runs on either side of the swim due to cool temperatures, but the change in format had little effect on the Americans in action.
