TRIATHLON – NOT ALWAYS ABOUT SPEED
In multi sport events, the main objective is to get from the start line to the finish line in the shortest time possible. Yes, there are plenty of secondary objectives, but for most, speed is the name of the game. In this issue, you’ll find plenty of articles to boost your speed. From tips to a speedier swim, bike and run (pages 30-35) to fast ways to fuel (page 36) and quick meals (page 38), there’s something for everyone. In addition, our mental prep article will help you deal with fears that come with going fast – speed bumps such as crashing on the bike or bonking on the run (page 40). With speed so oft en our focus in multi sport, we someti mes neglect what’s going on around us. We’ve heard some unfortunate stories this season of speed gone wrong. Too oft en, we hear negati ve anecdotes detailing poor sportsmanship. But the story I’m going to share recognizes a competitive athlete for going above and beyond good sportsmanship. At XTERRA Portland in August, former pro triathlete Jessi Stensland of Boulder, Colo., saw a struggling athlete ahead of her on the run course. As she approached, the athlete fell to the ground and was “very close to unconscious,” Stensland said. Stensland waited with the athlete unti l the medical team arrived and then continued her race. “Knowing there was nothing I could do at that moment, I ran toward the finish.” She finished third, and later tweeted, “Forfeited a win to save a life. #epic #worthit.” The athlete had suffered from heat stroke and dehydration but is recovering well, according to XTERRA. Athletes like Stensland are part of why the multi sport community is thriving. So keep pushing to get faster, but don’t forget to slow down every once in a while – you may do something more important than win a race.

THANKS TO DUATHLON, INJURIES DON’T MEAN MY SEASON IS OVER
Dear Triathlon Life: I enjoyed reading Steve Jonas’ article “Duathlon: What a Comeback!” in the Summer 2010 issue. He unfortunately left out one important reason why duathlons are being supported by many in the multi sport community: injury. This past spring I had a terrible cycling accident during a training ride, leaving me with a broken collarbone, fractured shoulder blade and cracked
rib.The severity of my injuries has ended my swim training for the rest of this year. Thanks to the proliferati on of local duathlons, I can still enjoy the thrill of competing while my shoulder heals. — Adam Berlin
