MCV 10/09/10 51 GAMES MEDIA AWARDS: THE FINALISTS TRADE TICKETS

The Games Media Awards are free to attend for the media. Y’know that lot – they’ll only turn up if they don’t have to pay. The rest of the industry can attend too, with Trade Tickets just £50.

For that, you get to see the top comic hosting the event (we’ll be revealing just who that is very soon) and of course find out who the winners are. Plus, there’s plenty of food and drink so you can stuff yourself/get hammered before the awards are handed out.

Contact Kathryn.Humphrey@intentme dia.co.uk to book your tickets.

The Bloomsbury set

The Games Media Awards return on Thursday, October 14th and boast a shiny new venue – the Bloomsbury Ballroom. Don’t let the plush surroundings deceive you: the event promises another booze-fuelled night celebrating the UK’s best games writers. 61 journos and publications are competiing for prizes. Here’s our guide to the finalists…

SINCE THEIR debut in 2007, the GMAs have become such a permanent fixture of the games industry calendar that it’s hard to remember a time when they didn’t take place.

Actually when you bring the UK games industry together to celebrate the best journalists, websites and magazines covering our sector you won’t remember much, given the free- flowing booze and general excitement.

For this year’s event, taking place on October 14th, we’ve moved venue – kiss good-bye to trendy-but-grotty Camden and say Hello to swanky West End venue The Bloomsbury Ballroom. Basically, it means the seats are

comfier, there’s more room to socialise in, the food is better – and should you, after a few hours’ merriment, fall over your fall will be broken by plush carpet, not sticky floorboards.

Yes, there will be comedy preceeding the awards. And maybe even some jokes in the acceptance speeches (as usual, carefully written in advance by the finalists so as not to sound like they weren’t actually written in advance). There are 10 key awards up for grabs this year including: Best National Newspaper Coverage, Best National Magazine Coverage and also the Best Games Blog. But favourites like Best

Magazine, Best Website, Rising Star and Best Print and Best Online writers are still present. That’s all rounded off by the night’s climax: Games Media Legend. All that’s left now is for our panel of games industry and media professionals to cast their vote. But who are they voting for? Conveniently enough, the next five pages profile all the finalists across our 11 awards. Have a read. See you in WC1.
