Rawlinson says: Industry must drop the ‘Woe is us’ attitude


Forget tax breaks – UKIE boss calls for industry pride as new brand goes live by Michael French


UKIE OUTLINED its ambitions to strengthen and unify the UK games industry this week.


And as part of the special unveiling for the association- formerly-known-as-ELSPA’s new ethos and brand identity, director general Michael Rawlinson told MCV that it’s time the UK looked beyond tax breaks in Government relations. Instead, the trade must find positive ways to underline that the games industry is still a global, commercial superpower. “Given the political


environment at the moment we are not going to get those tax breaks in the short term,” said Rawlinson in an interview. “That doesn’t mean we


aren’t going to build the case for them – tax breaks would be very valuable to the industry, support new IP and help grow new and existing companies if they ever made it into the Budget. “But they aren’t coming. So what do we do? Keep saying ‘Woe is us’? Or do we stop and

 There was a slight blip in sales this week; the UK games market value fell eight per cent to £14.2m, while units slipped five per cent to 727,524 games sold.


 Last week benefited from bank holiday offers and the launch of Mafia II, so the drop in sales was largely expected. In fact, it was Mafia IIthat did the business again, taking the No.1 position in the Chart-Track Top 40. New releases Tom Clancy’s HAWX 2made it to No.10, while Metroid: Other Mmanaged No.12.


 Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensionsand RUSEare out this week and are sure to break into the charts. But the big hitters arrive next week – Halo: Reachand PlayStation Move.
