VIRGIN Trains reports strong growth in passenger numbers over the last year, posting a 16 per cent rise to 26.6million passenger journeys. The increase looks all the more impressive when compared to a rail industry average of just one per cent growth, and Virgin will use the figures to boost its proposal to run East Coast services. The 2009/10 report from the Office of Rail Regulation also revealed that although 90 per cent of Virgin Trains' passengers were 'satisfied or very satisfied' with their journey, only 64 per cent felt the same about the value for money of their experience. The operator's ceo, Tony Collins, says passengers are turning to its West Coast
services in record numbers. “It's no accident that, despite the recession, Virgin Trains is seeing such spectacular growth – it's because we have invested heavily in improving our services.“ The rail operator is using

the figures to bolster its bid to run services on the East Coast route. The company's business development director, Paul Furze-Waddock, says, “We will be meeting as many people as possible on the East Coast to develop ideas for improvements on that route and we’ll be ready with a strong proposal for running services when the Department for Transport invites bids. We’re delivering for West Coast passengers, now we want to do the same on the East Coast.“
RAIL CREEPING FURTHER AFIELD
FURTHER evidence of a boom in rail travel – and recovery in the corporate sector – comes from cross-channel rail operator Eurostar, which posted six per growth in passenger numbers for the first half of 2010. While that is due in part to
the ash cloud which diverted passengers in large volumes from the airport to the train station, Eurostar says the increase was underpinned by a strengthening of the corporate sector. Eurostar also reports a rise
