Michael Knight of TTI, a NEDAmember company, explains how buying froma NEDAmember distributor helps
safeguard against counterfeit components
As president-elect of NEDA,Michael Knight, who is also TTI's vice president corporate productmanagement and suppliermarketing, will be the association’s president in 2011/2012. His experience in these roles gives hima thorough understanding of the benefits of buying froma NEDAmember distributor. So what's the score?
A significant portion of the electronic components sold around
the world are sold by independent resellers, a trend that has gotten stronger over time. Of the different types of companies who engage in the resell of electronic components, authorized distributors represent far and away the greatest portion of those sales.
The reason for this is pretty straight forward. Distributors who
are authorized, or franchised, by a component manufacturer have a contract in place with that manufacturer that provides some important benefits to the distributor’s customer for the components. It is typical that any warranty that a component manufacturer provides is transferable through an authorized distributor to that distributor’s customer. This is not the case if the parts are acquired from an unauthorized source.
In addition, the typical contract prohibits the distributor from
acquiring the manufacturer’s products from any other company but the manufacturer. This should provide the customer with considerable peace of mind in a time where counterfeit product, even of low cost commodity capacitors and resistors, is rampant in the industry. In this way, an authorized distributor not only offers the end customer access to genuine parts that came directly off the manufacturer’s production line, they can provide the documentation and other assurances, which the user of the parts may need to provide to their end customer.
Authorized distributors of electronic components have a trade
association which was organized to promote the benefits for both customers and component manufacturers alike of using the

authorized distribution channel. The National Electronics Distributor Association (NEDA) is comprised of a wide variety of distributors ranging from local specialty distributors with only one location to global broad line distributors with distribution centers measuring in the hundreds of thousands of square feet. They all have one thing in common; they meet NEDA’s strict requirements for being contractually authorized to sell components from the suppliers that they promote.
President-elect of NEDA,Michael Knight Are all authorized distributors NEDA members? No they are
not, but most are. When a customer buys components from a NEDA member they take advantage of a measure of already established vetting that they might otherwise need to do themselves. The NEDA membership signifies a professional distributor that has and abides by a contract with the component suppliers whom they represent, and as a result, provides their customer with safeguards against counterfeit electronic parts making their way into the electronic assemblies or equipment that they build.
The NEDA logo symbolizes less risk and more tangible benefits
for a consumer of electronic components. Fortunately for all, NEDA membership is open to any distributor who can demonstrate that they embrace and live by these concepts.
