SEMICONDUCTORS Flash products to be sold through distributor

Microchip Technology Inc. has granted an exclusive limited license to sell certain Serial NOR-Flash products fromits Silicon Storage Technology subsidiary (“SST”) to Professional Computer Technology, Ltd. (“PCT”) headquartered in Taiwan. PCT is a distributor that specializes in the distribution of software, chips, modules and other semiconductor parts. The license is limited to certain geographic regions and industry segments. The financial terms of the licensewere not disclosed. This is an exclusive limited license to sell

Serial NOR-Flash products of SST from512K to 64MB density in the geographic regions of Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, and ASEAN (Singapore,Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnamand Philippines). The license is limited to the industry segments of optical

disc drives, set top boxes, electronic books, video games, digital displays, DVD player/recorder, notebook computers, netbooks, desktop computers, PCmonitors, mass storage devices, printers/scanners/ copiers/faxes, PC-CAM, point of sale devices, graphics cards, servers/clients/workstations, andmobile phones. PCT has no license to sell these SST Serial NOR-Flash products to any industry segments or geographic regions other than those listed above. Under this license, PCT will be able to buy wafers for the Serial NOR-Flash products fromSST’s foundries in Taiwan and China and have the wafers probed, assembled and tested using SST’s qualified subcontractors in Taiwan and China. PCT will then sell these products to

the licensedmarket under its own brand name. Any backlog fromthe licensedmarket that is on SST’s books for the period beginning September 1, 2010 will be transferred to PCT. “This deal continues our restructuring of the

SST business by allowingMicrochip to transfer an important component of SST’s Serial NOR- FlashMemory business to PCT through the grant of an exclusive limited license.Microchip has received a license fee at closing andwill receive a royalty on the sale of each device. This dealwill reduce SST’sMemory revenue andmonetize it in the formof a license fee and ongoing royalties,” said Steve Sanghi, president and CEOofMicrochip.

www.microchip.com Controller requires fewer supporting components

Linear Technology Corp. introduces the LTC4219 5A Hot Swap controller for protecting low power boards with load supply voltages ranging from2.9V to 15V. The LTC4219 allows a board to be safely inserted and removed froma live backplane by limiting the amount of inrush current to the load supply during power up. Hot Swap controllers typically call for a number of supporting components.

However, the LTC4219 integrates a powerMOSFET and sense resistor in its power path to limit inrush current, reducing the number of external components required. The device's internal

dV/dt circuitmeans there is no need for an external gate capacitor. An adjustable current limit allows users to vary the current limit threshold under different loading conditions, for example in disk drive spin-up to normal operation. This high level of integration, packaged in a tiny DFN,makes the LTC4219 a convenient Hot Swap solution in space-constrained applications. The LTC4219 is suitable for a wide range of RAID, server, telecom

and industrial applications, especially in compact boards utilizing technologies like Fibre Channel where power is typically limited to less than 25Wdue to their small size and inability to dissipate large amounts of heat. The LTC4219 was designed with these considerations inmind. During start-up, inrush currents are controlled by limiting the gate ramp rate to a safe 0.3V/ms. Load current ismonitored using the voltage sensed across the internal 7.5mOhmsense resistor and adjusting the internal 33mOhmMOSFET gate-to-source voltage accordingly. A separate ISET pin enables adjustment of the 10% accurate (5A) current limit threshold during start-up and normal operation as needed. In addition, current foldback and power-good circuitry ensure that the switch is protected fromexcessive load current and indicate whether or not healthy power conditions are maintained. The LTC4219 also features current, temperature and fault outputs, as well as an adjustable current limit timer. The LTC4219 is available as a dedicated 12V (LTC4219-12) or 5V

(LTC4219-5) version, which contain preset 12V/5V-specific thresholds. Both devices are offered in commercial and industrial operating temperature grades. The LTC4219 is available in a small, RoHS- compliant, 16-pin 5mmx 3mmDFN package and priced starting at $3.35 each in 1,000 piece quantities.
