Pathways and prizes at AfPP2010

2010 Congress pathways confirmed

The Association for Perioperative Practice (AfPP) has announced four key pathways under which masterclasses and specialist sessions will feature at this year’s AfPP2010 Congress and Exhibition

Held at the Harrogate International Centre on 14-16 October 2010 alongside the UK’s leading two-day medical device exhibition, this year’s congress includes a Saturday for the first time and provides a series of both educational and non- clinical seminars and workshops tailored to delegates, all for a delegate rate starting from just £89*.

Take the right path

Anaesthetics and recovery: ideal for nurses, ODPs, anaesthetists, students and support workers, sessions will include the management of DVT/VTE and difficult airways

Theatre managers: for managers, matrons and non- executive directors, these sessions include statement writing and giving evidence, human factors training and advanced surgical roles

Students & support workers: including health care assistants who will be interested in sessions on career pathways, mentorship and developing or refreshing basic skills such as scrubbing up and infection prevention

Clinical services managers including commissioners: of particular interest will be the mid-Staffs inquiry, never events and bullying/harassment.

Jul/Aug 10

These are suggested pathways for a selection of job roles. The programme offers practical workshops, plus good practice and theory for perioperative practitioners working in all areas and specialisms at any level of their career.

Infection prevention

Infection prevention, infection control and decontamination feature on all three days in masterclasses – interactive workshop sessions enabling delegates to participate more directly in discussions and best practice.

Masterclass S10, entitled Hand Washing and Scrubbing Up, will be a practical session on the principles of hand washing including the steps and time to take, solutions to use, and why the process should be repeated for scrubbing up. S15 on Sharps and Infection Prevention will outline the NICE guidance on SS1, discuss the practitioner’s role in implementing the guidance and cover up to three topical issues in greater detail.

The issue of instrument decontamination has been in the spotlight recently after quality assurance checks on 346 surgical instruments purchased by Barts and the London Trust between January and June, found that a quarter of them were not fit to be used.**

AfPP president Diane Gilmour explained: “We have been at the forefront of the decontamination debate nationally: our position is absolutely clear. Effective decontamination of instruments is a must and it doesn’t matter whether that decontamination is performed in-house or outsourced as long as the correct

instruments are available, at the right time and correctly decontaminated.”

The Congress has also taken the initiative by focusing on current non-clinical issues. For example, Dr Phil Hammond is the opening speaker on the subject of “Difficult Discussions – Speaking up/Speaking Out”, whilst Sir Stephen Moss will deliver a session on “Mid-Staffordshire: too close for comfort”.

Awarding innovation

AfPP is aiming to enhance still further the exhibitor and delegate experience at the event with the launch of the brand new Innovation Awards, which will celebrate innovation on the show floor for recognition by AfPP’s membership and other perioperative practitioners around the UK. Exhibiting companies are invited to enter one of the following categories:

Best Overall Innovative Product Best Innovation in Anaesthetics Best Innovation in General Surgery

Best Innovation in Patient Safety Best Innovation in Infection Control

Innovations will have been launched into the marketplace between 1 January 2007 and 31 July 2010 and entries, which will
