SCOTTISH HEALTHCARE

A Healthy choice on offer in Scotland

nyone looking for the ideal location to host a meeting, conference or event

needs look no further than Scotland. A world apart, yet anything but remote, Scotland has just the right prescription for memorable experiences to suit any budget.

With everything from state of the art conference centres to contemporary and traditional hotels and stately homes and castles, event organisers will be spoilt for choice. Dramatic landscapes, vibrant cultural cities and centres of academic excellence with a particular focus on medicine and healthcare all combine to make Scotland one of the most diverse locations in the world.

VisitScotland’s dedicated business tourism unit leads in showcasing Scotland to the rest of the world and its success is evidenced by results. In total, over 330 association conferences – virtually one a day – are held in Scotland. Edinburgh and Glasgow are second only to London in the UK and recent research carried out by VisitBritain saw both cities in the top three in Europe for value for money in hosting conferences.

Across the country, significant investment in the business tourism infrastructure is either planned or underway. Just a few examples include a new 12,000 seat arena at the Scottish Exhibition + Conference Centre in Glasgow; doubling of capacity at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre; new 5-star hotels in Glasgow; new Missoni and Hotel du Vin hotels in Edinburgh; and major refurbishment of traditional

hotels such as Turnberry Resort in Ayrshire, the Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow, Crieff Hydro in Perthshire and Doubletree by Hilton in Dunblane.

As the true home of golf, the investment extends to redeveloping existing Scottish golf courses and creating new golf developments such as the Trump International Development outside Aberdeen and the new Castle Stuart golf course overlooking the Moray Firth near Inverness. These new developments complement more than 500 existing facilities for beginners to regular golfers and up to full world-class championship courses.

And it doesn’t stop there. Delegates can be inspired, motivated and rewarded with an enviable choice of activities to bring a touch of pleasure and leisure to the business day. Truly competitive types will enjoy swinging through the trees with Treezone at Rothiemurchus Estate in Aviemore or Go Ape in the central belt; adventurous delegates can explore the rugged outdoors on a guided hike with Wilderness Scotland or white water rafting, 4x4 safaris and orienteering at locations all over

the country.

But the real reason to consider Scotland for any medical or healthcare related event lies in the country’s indigenous expertise and reputation in the fields of medicine, technology and scientific research. University campuses in every city and region offer first- class conferencing facilities combined with substantial on- site residential accommodation available outwith term times.

While Edinburgh University’s global reputation in medicine is unrivalled, other universities also boast the finest credentials in this sector with Stirling recognised for nursing, midwifery, dementia services and psychology and St Andrews for cancer care research, its renowned Bute Medical School and its Schools of Biology and Chemistry.

Through an extensive network of ambassadors, the business tourism unit runs an active ambassador programme in

these universities encouraging everyone involved in professional bodies and associations to help spread the message about what Scotland offers.

One particular venue in Scotland is a favourite for NHS events and one which is investing heavily in technology to bring the ‘live’ experience of the operating theatre right into the conference room.

The Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre has already beamed images from the cardiac catheterisation laboratories at the adjoining Golden Jubilee National Hospital into their auditorium and has plans to extend this facility for conference and teaching purposes.

So, with such a wealth of facilities, locations, expertise and the BTU team on hand to advise on the perfect venue, conference organisers can be sure the prognosis is good for successful and inspiring events.
