IT & TELECOMS

Cost effective and Green IT solutions? It is possible

I

T is often regarded as an unavoidable expense but with a true understanding of every aspect of your IT infrastructure, Green Lane Solutions can provide you with inside information and simple ideas that are often overlooked when implementing IT infrastructure and systems to make sure you’re getting the most for your money.

GLS specialise in the SME market and can extract the best value from service providers. Recent developments probably means more smaller business units within the NHS controlling their own IT & Comms so Green Lane Solutions are ideally placed to support them.

Why not run voice and data traffic over one circuit? IP telephony is just one way to reduce operating costs and maintain or even increase the efficiency of communications. It reduces phone bills and rental charges by sharing the same circuit for voice & data traffic or can be a great back up when phone lines go down or have issues. Once implemented links can be made to multiple locations from a central host.

Without knowing how much power is being used and where, it’s very difficult to identify where savings can be made. With many organisations in the public sector now forced to commit to carbon reduction, the only way to prove reduced usage is to measure consumption today and to plan for reduction. GLS can offer many solutions to measure and present the information both privately and publicly. Using clamp meters is

Telecom and the trust’s IT suppliers) to ensure that the rollout did not impact adversely on the operation of the business

The project involved installing two Nortel CS1000’s at two different locations to form a ‘redundant core’, management of the installation of various ISDN 30 circuits at the medical centres and the deployment of SRG PABX’s to provide resilience. The project currently provides telephony services for 600 users but will eventually support 2000 users.

a simple method to temporarily measure Comms & IT power consumption.

Using agencies to find staff in the IT sector can be frustrating, not to mention expensive and finding the right person for the job can often take longer than the job itself.

GLS’s adaptable support contracts means you have access to fully qualified specialist staff covering almost all aspects of your IT & Comms infrastructure, from phone engineers and IP telephone specialists to cabling installation and design consultants.

Green Lane Solutions have been providing IT and telephony services to the Barking and Dagenham Primary Care Trust since 2004.

During this time GLS have been involved in in a number of projects including installing structured cabling solutions into the trust’s main office

and at various medical centres throughout Barking and Dagenham, designing and building comms rooms at various locations throughout the two boroughs and acting as security consultants to the trust.

GLS were appointed by the PCT to act as technical consultants and project managers for the trust’s VoIP rollout across the fourteen sites it is responsible for in Barking and Dagenham.

The PCT felt that GLS were able to undertake these roles because of their knowledge of the PCT’s various networks and their experience of deploying VoIP solutions.

GLS were members of the project board and liaised with the PCT’s suppliers (British

GLS arranged alternative engineering resource and supplies of equipment when late delivery of equipment would have resulted in the trust’s deadlines not being met. This included the supply of two Nortel 8300 Ethernet switches, three Nortel 5520 switches and telephone handsets for various sites

GLS were then asked to provide wireless services to several sites that could allow VoIP access from the Nortel platform as well as general data access.

GLS’s relationship with the trust continues to be productive and they have already be asked to contribute to a number of projects including liaising with audio visual suppliers to develop an audio visual solution to meet the organisations goal of conducting paperless meetings.
