veryday, millions of medical images are captured, distributed, viewed and stored


using Fujifilm’s world-beating technology. Fuji has been selling X-ray film in the UK since the 1960s but over the intervening 50 years the company has moved medical technology forward in leaps and bounds.


Long recognised as a world-class innovator, Fujifilm invented the first computed radiography (CR) system in the 1980s. This major development precipitated the revolution we now see within general radiography. Almost all X-ray imaging is now performed using digital acquisition systems, either CR, or, increasingly, direct radiography (DR) systems.


Not happy to rest on its laurels Fujifilm continues to develop its CR systems to the point where the current “FCR-XG5000” is capable of producing over 160 X-ray images an hour. Speed is only one advantage of Fuji’s products. Another is that image quality remains at the heart of everything that it does. The “FCR-PROFECT” exemplifies this with its 50- micron resolution high-quality images, allowing its use in mammography.


Fuji invented CR and is now reinventing DR with the introduction of its first full field digital mammography unit, the “FDR-AMULET”. This remarkable machine features patented image detector technology which allows very high-quality and 50- micron resolution images to be produced extremely quickly and

anywhere in the hospital. This mobile X-ray system has one of Fuji’s superb CR image plate readers built in for seamless integration. X-rays can be uploaded to PACS wirelessly and can be viewed on the ward, or anywhere else, in seconds.


Whilst mentioning PACS it is impossible to ignore Fujifilm’s offering in this area. “SYNAPSE” is a totally web- based picture archiving and communications system which is used to manage millions of images around the world every single day. SYNAPSE has everything that you need to manage every aspect of imaging from 3D and mammography through to fluoroscopy and cardiology.

Fujifilm has not neglected innovation in general DR either and has now installed the first of its new “FDR-AcSelerate” rooms. Woodend Hospital, Aberdeen, is the first site in the UK to benefit from this high-specification DR room. AcSelerate features fully automated positioning, collimation and exposure which makes the imaging process as efficient as possible. The automation of so many features provides significant ergonomic improvements for both staff and patients.


Woodend will shortly be adding Fuji’s latest imaging tool to its arsenal when they install


the “FDR D-EVO” portable DR detector. The D-EVO can be used to complement the AcSelerate DR room in order to perform all out of bucky examinations or can be used alone as a retrofit addition to any conventional X-ray room. The retrofit option provides one of the most cost-effective ways of converting an existing room to direct radiography.


Taking digital radiography to the rest of the hospital is as simple as pushing a button with the “FCR-Go”. Having a Go is like having an X-ray room on wheels which can be taken to the patient

The next development on the horizon from Fuji’s medical R&D team is the new portable ultrasound machine the “FAZONE-CB”. The FAZONE is a lightweight, high-quality imaging tool which can be carried easily to wherever the patient needs it. The FAZONE will be available later this year.


Fujifilm is able to offer all the usual financial arrangements to allow you access to their great products such as cash purchase or leasing but also offer some more innovative solutions such as managed service contracts or even pay per image.


Fujifilm also does great photography!
