This process is designed to help trusts make strategic purchasing decisions to ensure that their capital spend reaches its maximum potential.

3. Project management – we provide support with procurement management of capital purchases and durables for refurbishment, PFI or new build projects. The capital team is able to support trusts to achieve project’s goals.

Through aggregating NHS spend the capital team is able to achieve better pricing for trusts by committing volume to suppliers and through bulk buying. In 2009, NHS Supply Chain purchased £20 million of capital equipment, creating a further five to eight per cent savings over national contract pricing.


Ordering through NHS Supply Chain has additional advantages. Its catalogue of over 500,000 products enables trusts to order its products through a single point of access and its management of the procurement process negates an NHS organisation’s need to tender through the Official Journal of


the European Union (OJEU).


Costs can also be reduced through its one-route solution that consolidates all products onto one invoice and delivery resulting in back office savings.


3. Leasing


Following the demise of NHS PASA, NHS Supply Chain took over responsibility for equipment leases and the national framework agreement for leasing. In March this year, NHS Supply Chain launched a new framework agreement which aims to cut transactions costs and help trusts make better procurement decisions. The new leasing framework offers options to trusts that don’t have the funds to commit to large capital purchases and maintenance contracts.
