iPOCT first to gain UK accreditation for point-of-care testing ndependent Point of Care

Service Delivery: Clinical & Quality Governance

Testing Services (iPOCT) has become the first organisation to be granted UK

accreditation for point-of-care testing. This accreditation gives confidence in the competence of iPOCT’s innovative, customer- focused testing service and may ultimately lead to improved clinical care for patients.

iPOCT, a trading division of Unilabs Ltd, was granted accreditation in October 2009 to ISO 15189 and 22870 by UKAS following a robust assessment of its POCT services. One feature of ISO 22870 is that providers of point-of-care testing should be involved in clinical governance, something that is addressed during assessments

thus offering better access and providing faster results for immediate clinical decision making. Increased community- based testing could limit the number of visits a patient has to make to hospitals and clinics and may even reduce the number of people admitted to hospital. The model of service delivery is hub and spoke where the hub is iPOCT and the spokes are the

various customer site locations where the testing takes place. All spoke sites benefit from a single contact point for all queries relating to POCT. This includes general enquiries, technical help, clinical advice and placing orders for all POCT related consumables. In essence it’s a ‘one stop shop.’ One of the most innovative aspects of iPOCT’s approach is the way it interacts

with its customers. The model incorporates processes for: ensuring ‘appropriate testing’ that will bring benefits to the clinical pathway; consideration of cost efficiencies in terms of the entire patient pathway and ability of the health care organisation to adjust clinical processes to make the best use of POCT; full end to end connectivity to capture all test data with 24 hour monitoring of connections.; integration of test results into information systems; organisation of staff who undertake testing, including training, competence assessment and ongoing monitoring; robust framework for clinical governance.

iPOCT is independent of any IVD supplier and as such selects and validates analysers for use in alternative clinical settings to be fit for purpose.
