DEMAND PROMPTS LED CHIP RAMP UP

Sharp will start mass production of blue LED chips at its Fukuyama Plant in Japan within 2010. This is in response to growing demand for LED backlights for LCD TVs and LED lighting fixtures. Sharp started blue LED chip production at

nearbyMihara Plant in January 2010. To meet positive market demand in the mid to long term, Sharp has decided to start production at the Fukuyama Plant as well and to expand materials procurement. This will boost Sharp’s production capacity of blue LED chips to approximately five billion units a year in fiscal 2011.

DEMANDISON THEUP

Afdec has released the latest performance figures fromthe UK and Ireland manufacturer authorised distributors of electronic components sector, revealing a remarkable 27.2 per cent increase in billings inMarch 2010 compared to the previous month and a 25.8 per cent increase compared to the samemonth last year. According to Afdec/Electronics

Component Supply Network (ECSN) chairman, AdamFletcher, theMarch ’10 figures indicate improving demand and activity fromUK customers: “This is an outstanding result, but there is still no single identifiable demand driver in the UK, so I suspect wemay be witnessing a peak in the UK demand cycle that’s likely to flatten out somewhat over the next quarter. Component manufacturing lead times are settling down to be longer than average over the last few years. Sporadic product shortages are occurring in some areas butmanufacturers are responding quickly to resolve them.” Compared to the same period last year:

semiconductor billings increased by 38.2 per cent; passives increased by 33.1 per cent; electro-mech increased by 16.9 per cent; and component assemblies increased by 14.4 per cent. The book-to-bill ratio declined to 1.06:1 in all product groups as authorised distributors converted Q1’s strong bookings into billings. Fletcher continued: “It seems that

customers are placing significant additional order cover and that they are consuming the materials they buy, however wemust continue to exercise care andmaintain close control of costs, particularly inventory, through this period of unexpected growth.”
