Future Electronics' supply chain solutionsmanager, Nigel Field, explains howbonded inventory helps ease lead-time uncertainty and volatility
Electronics OEMproductionmanagers know what it feels like to be between the devil and the deep blue sea. As lead times grow and components go on allocation, they have to stockpile supplies to ensure the factory keeps working. Then, when the cycle inevitably turns and end-user demand softens, they risk being left with excess stock or obsolete devices, and can be forced to write down the value of the inventory they worked so hard to build up.
The semiconductor industry in
particular is prone to wild swings between excess demand and excess supply. Future Electronics’ bonded inventorymanagement (BIM) programme reduces the effect of these damaging swings.
In a typical engagement, a
customer works with Future Electronics to establish a shared forecast for component requirements, based on demand forecasts and historical patterns of consumption. Future then ‘bonds’ the customer’s bill ofmaterials (BOM) in its warehouse, reserving threemonths’ supply (or the supplier’s lead time – whichever is the greater) of each component for that one customer. Bonded inventory is not available to sell and cannot be supplied to any other customer, but the BIM customer does not pay for it until it is shipped.
Future Electronics’ account
managers track lead-time trends carefully, increasing or decreasing stocks in response to changes in suppliers’ lead-times. They also work with the customer to keep its requirement forecast current and accurate.
The availability of protected
inventory that reflects the customer’s usage patterns provides: insulation from fluctuations in suppliers’ lead times; less volatile demand forecasts; reduced obsolescence and excess inventory; lower total materials costs; improved cashflow; and increased inventory turns above the industry average of 105 days’ inventory.
