Twiggy’s Sojourn! H

By Robin Maclear

On a perfect summer’s evening on the Thames at Greenwich on June 4, Seabourn’s latest ship Seabourn Sojourn was christened by Twiggy, an iconic fi gure of the 1960s and 70s and still very much a household name with her own fashion label.

owever, the naming ceremony was only the fi rst part of a three- day celebration of Seabourn’s latest and greatest, with an eye-opening programme of gala events and fund-raising. As Seabourn president Pam Conover pointed out, both Twiggy and Sojourn are jointly linked as “beautiful, stylish and timeless.” The occasion was compered by BBC news-reader Sophie Raworth who, together with the ever-elegant Conover and their star guest, made for a wonderful trio. Conover insisted: “We are very pleased to introduce Seabourn Sojourn to London and the world. She is a beauty inside and out, offering luxurious accommodations, the fi nest cuisine and gracious, personal- ised service along with a sleek and stylish design. Sojourn will provide the exclusive and intimate experience Seabourn is known for and our guests have come to love and enjoy.” This is Seabourn’s second ship in less

than a year and no expense has been spared in making this equally sharp. Identical to Odyssey but with a few added features, she takes a maximum of 450 guests with four exquisite open-seating restaurants. The naming was followed by another party attended by the main fi gures of the cruise industry, including Micky Arison,

Chairman and CEO of the Carnival Corporation – owners of Seabourn – and Lord Sterling and our own Admiral, among many others. It was very much the social event of the cruise year to date. The following day on board was fully

given over to Twiggy’s charity, Breast Cancer Haven, for which a substantial sum was raised.

On the third day of the festivities, we sailed from Greenwich with 370 lucky guests on Sojourn’s inaugural 14 day voyage to Iceland and Norway. The band of the Royal Marines played Land of Hope of Glory as we sailed up the Thames and brought a lump to the throat. I escorted 25 guests and the general impression was one of delight and total satisfaction. As one of our group put it: “Regent and Silversea just cannot compete with this any more!” Next summer will see the launch of

third sister, Seabourn Quest, and will probably cement Seabourn’s position as No 1 in the Luxury cruise market. Sojourn will sail 12-14-day voyages of Scandinavia, Russia and the Baltic this summer before re-positioning to the Caribbean in November and setting sail on a 111-day world voyage from Los Angeles to Southampton in January.
