A Solution for Horsetails Much myth and folk law

surround the control of the problematic weed “Horsetails” (Equisetum spp) which is often confused with and called “Mare’s Tail”. Cultural control methods are difficult and usually make the problem worse. The roots can extend 1.5m deep rendering complete removal virtually impossible. New plants can grow from broken roots and fragmented stem sections. Until recently, chemical control methods have also been unsuccessful. “Glyphosate”

struggles to

penetrate plant’s waxy cuticle and stories of attempting to “bruise” the plant before chemical treatment are also unfounded. A new total weedkiller called

“Kibosh” (containing glufosinate- ammonium) appears to be a solution. Always read the label

Trimax Mowing Systems has announced it will now offer a three year mechanical warranty as standard on new rotary and flail mowers. The warranty covers the mowers in full time commercial use and was previously limited to one year, with two years on certain components. Marketing Manager for Trimax, Tim Fanning, believes the offer is unlikely to be followed by other mower manufacturers. “We have always built mowers of

exceptional quality, and have total confidence in every machine that comes out of the factory. That’s an easy thing to say, but to back it up with warranty is quite a different matter. Our product is not the cheapest to buy, but if you consider life cost,

maintenance and downtime, the value is easy to see”.

John Deere has launched an called

National Gardens Park, with an aim to safeguard the important environmental benefits they bring to our increasingly urbanised society. The company has identified that there is between 17 and 20 million domestic lawns, the majority of which are in inner city or urban locations – but they are under threat from the paving slab and the spade as homeowners create car and caravan parking, home extensions and hard landscaping. “Lawns are an icon of our gardens and we neglect them at

our peril,” says John Deere’s division manager, David Hart. “They have so many benefits to the environment, helping to prevent flash flooding, cooling temperatures, absorbing carbon dioxide which is converted into oxygen and they provide a natural environment for birds, animals and insects.”

He also points out that 100

square metres of lawn will produce sufficient oxygen each day to support nearly two adults and the total area of domestic lawn produces enough oxygen each day for half of the UK population.
